They don't go without pay. They are paid for every day they are on active duty. They won't get extras like housing allowance and certain duty bonuses though. If their guard pay is less than their usual work, they take a pay hit that can really affect their family, on top of being gone.

It's also a serious hardship to businesses. If they run their own, a long deployment can shutter it. Businesses have to pay more for temporary workers. Our ICU manager was gone for months; we split up his work, had nobody to stick up for us with Admin, and infighting ensued.

They ended up replacing him (illegal) and then offered him a made-up Admin job when he returned. He stayed about a year then his job was mysteriously phased out and he was laid off. It sucked for everybody.
