The vision only system limits them to well marked roads with highway only modes. What I had read in the past. The trailer must be picked up by human to bring the load into the city and distribute the cargo. Minimal interaction is needed until traffic is mixed in.

When they leave the scene of an accident (that they caused and didn't notice) I want to see the police chase. I also want to see the CEO of the company in prison but I don't get what I want anymore.

I hate automated menus. I can't imagine dealing with the equivalent as a passenger in a moving car. If the car is moving, there needs to be a way to make it stop and unlock immediately, not sit through "your call may be monitored..." to talk to someone.

I've been in a Waymo in SF. Because they are non-aggressive, the human driver's pullout in front of them and cut them off all the time. The car responds accordingly. My worry is something from Tesla. I think they attempt too much real-world testing to find the bugs.

250+ miles (one way) technically qualifies as “long haul” in the industry, so Houston to Dallas is just about there. As for fuel: Depending on the load weight and the terrain, most 16-wheelers can travel between 1,000-1,400 miles on a 240-gallon fill-up, (based on around 6 MPG).

It's not the end of the world. Long haul driving should be automated. It's safer for automated vehicles than humans. And driving all day is not so special a human activity that it needs to be protected from obsolescence. That said, we should transition with UBI & single payer healthcare.

laloutre11.bsky.social @laloutre11.bsky.social

It's not about driving skill, it's about morale. If pedestrian suddenly cross in front of you, you'll most likely try to avoid them, even if it's means that there will be material damage. What about a driverless truck? Should they favour human life over material damage?

may 1, 2025, 11:04 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Tom St Denis @tomstdenis.bsky.social

It's idiotic to think they wouldn't be programmed to avoid colliding with everything. The real question is will it understand what it's seeing in time to actually do something safe. The "trolley problem" nonsense is stupid. AI cars don't make "moral" calls they just follow training.

may 1, 2025, 11:06 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
laloutre11.bsky.social @laloutre11.bsky.social

So what are they trained to do? Avoid human casualty at all cost? What if they have to chose between 1 elderly and 1 kid? It's stupid to think the AI is not following a set of rule or algorithm that someone wrote. I can tell you there is probably a number written next to "Human life" somewhere

may 1, 2025, 11:12 pm • 3 0 • view
avatar
Tom St Denis @tomstdenis.bsky.social

If anything their actions are based on their training and hardware limitations, thus their "morality" is borrowed from the people who designed the training. But AI cars don't evaluate things on that sort of basis "is it moral to run a red" it's just "input is this, good output is that"

may 1, 2025, 11:17 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
laloutre11.bsky.social @laloutre11.bsky.social

Well, that's my point -_- Then how do you think they value human life vs material damage in those algorithms? Dig a bit, and you will see that there is a $$$ value next to human life. I'm afraid of seeing that value.

may 1, 2025, 11:23 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Tom St Denis @tomstdenis.bsky.social

Again, it'd either be trained to avoid obstacles or not. Training is basically give it inputs (pictures/sensors), and then watch the output (steer/brake/etc). If the output is good upweight those parameters, otherwise downweight, etc. So you'd train it to not collide with obstacles....

I don't think it is. I've ridden in an autonomous WayMo many times, on the chaotic streets of San Francisco. This seems safer and easier than that. If it's safer than long-haul human drivers (who famously often push their limits on sleep), would you agree it is a good thing?

John Berry @aniccia.bsky.social

They haven't been proven safer. That'd take far more testing & disclosure than any of the robot companies have done or allowed and more than regulators require. US vehicle regulations are permissive. If the mfg attests/claims their tech is safe enough, then it is permitted until proven otherwise.

may 2, 2025, 10:29 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
John Pettus @johngpettus.bsky.social

I don't know that that's true. If you have some credible references, I'd be interested to learn more. But I do know that DoT has worked with the robot companies and that the regs ARE doing something. There's a reason WayMo is allowed to operate autonomously and Tesla isn't.

Which, AV safety needing vastly more evidence or permissive by default US vehicle reg and esp AV reg? WRT safety, see myth #11 of Prof. Phil Koopman, who has written much more on this if you want more detail or links: safeautonomy.blogspot.com/2021/10/debu...

may 2, 2025, 10:49 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
John Berry @aniccia.bsky.social

There is no US Federal regulation preventing Tesla from operating autonomously. None. California and some other states have regulations limiting uncrewed operations, but many states are extremely permissive, eg Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and Oklahoma.

Uber claimed they did not need to comply with California's AV regulations and had their unpermitted robots driving in SF, inc running red lights, until DMV cancelled all their vehicle registrations. Then Arizona Governor welcomed them slamming California, until Uber killed Elaine Herzberg in Tempe.

may 2, 2025, 10:56 pm • 1 0 • view

John Berry @aniccia.bsky.social

GM Cruise criminally mislead Federal regulators re the safety of their system. They also misled California regulators, while racking up 4 million miles of what DMV determined were "not safe" robot driving in SF. All of which only came out after their robot ran over & dragged a woman underneath 20ft.

may 2, 2025, 11:03 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
John Pettus @johngpettus.bsky.social

I hear your examples, but I make decisions based on data. How many human drivers hit and killed people in those same timeframes? WayMo has been EVERYWHERE in SF and if they were causing accidents (let alone killing people) we would hear about it and it would be stopped. It sure seems to be safe.

22. Demand for taxi and truck drivers will go down, eventually to zero. Someone born today might not understand what a truck driver is or even understand why someone would do that job — much like people born in the last 30 years don’t understand how someone could be employed as a switchboard operator
