It sucks for the workers, but US Steel is a very small company now; it was effectively killed back in the Reagan era when most of the steel industry went overseas. My dad worked for US Steel and I spent my early childhood moving around the country as he helped shut down plants.

I am sorry to hear about your story. Starting with Reagan, the neoliberal (laissez-faire, trickle down) economics really took hold in our society. Tax laws were structured so rich got richer, companies didn’t invest long term. Gov’t became the bogey man. Who invested in its people? China.

The real issue. You CANNOT have a state deficit since 1970 & a trade deficit for 50 yrs & think that nothing will happen. The accountancy of trade is per definition 0: your loss is someone's gain.
