There have been 9 cat 5s since 2016, out of a total of 63 hurricanes in the Atlantic basin. That’s 14.28% of the total. That isn’t “rare” by any stretch. Now, if we look back to 1935 there have been 40 total, or about 4% which one might characterize as rare. Seems like it’s getting worse🤷🏼‍♂️
