I am reluctant to share mass media's idea that something caused suicide. They said that about DnD in the 80s, they said me being trans would lead to suicide if society allowed it. The lawsuit will hopefully bring more to light, but folx we aren't getting rid of AI. Pandora's box and all that.

They deserve a HUGE payout all AI should be prohibited from providing any MH advice except to seek treatment. This is absolutely a criminal act that I would have been prosecuted for if I had done it. If I created an AI process to tap into bank accounts and withdraw money, that’d be criminal. Same.

I am not surprised by this. I worked for an online crisis center and one of the reasons I left was because they were turning to machine learning to generate responses that I was expected to give to people in distress who had texted in for help.

I thought it was horrible, too, obviously, but their professed reasoning was not that it was lazy but that it allowed them/us to serve more people in a more timely fashion. (It also had something to do with the big tech guys who gave them millions and wanted quantifiable 'results')

I have not been associated with them for six or seven years and cannot speak to their current policies and practices. I do know that they have had some major internal shake-ups including the firing of the CEO but that's as much as I know.

I called & texted suicide help twice & both times, the responses were generic from a script...made me want to die even more. Uncaring scripts & AI needs to be banned in mental health situations. It's the difference between life & death.
