They are, and LLMs are trained and tuned not to communicate effectively, but to exploit people's gullibility and convince them that they are communicating effectively. Not sure if that was intentional or accidental.

Anyone paying attention to the last decade of AI could have predicted that -neural networks' only goal is to maximize their score on the provided evaluation heuristic, and 99% of articles are about how the heuristic wasn't airtight and the neural network "cheated" in some hilarious way

If you make an AI to determine how "smart" someone is from a video, it will look to see if they have a big bookcase. If you tell it to predict crime based on police arrest records, it will learn the racial biases hat drive arrests. If you make one to make people like it, it will affirm beliefs.

For what it's worth, this should really expose a lot about human nature to a lot of us.
