Yeah, well… you really have to take into account that the US polls between 30% and 33% butthurt confederate traitor that wants revenge for Grant et al. kicking their grandpappies’ behinds since Reconstruction. Sherman was absolutely right about how to finish it, and he was very fond of the South.
That's partly true, but certainly not true of all southerners. My own 2x great-grandfather was a Confederate cavalryman who was captured & sent to a Union prison where he died at age 26. I hold no grudge for that. But I do feel sorry for him & the 3 children he left behind. Tragedy all around.
One of my mom’s uncles fought for the confederacy. When he finally got up the nerve to come back home & ask to make amends, his brothers burned his uniform and kit in a pit, buried it, and never spoke about it again. The whole family was ashamed of him & hid it. That story nearly died with grandpa.
If it wasn't for that, they wouldn't be in this situation. He even said at some of his rallies that he loved the poorly educated.
