I worked for JAG. If you follow an illegal order, you will be court martialed. And it may carry a felony conviction in your civilian records that will follow you forever. Following an illegal order will destroy your military career and civilian life. Nobody will protect you.

And if you refuse you will be discharged and arrested for not following orders!

The challenges of that job (such as deciding on risks) are balanced by the exceptional benefits that are awarded to those who enlist.

You wonโ€™t be discharged for refusing an actual illegal order. It is your responsibility to refuse an illegal order and report it to superiors immediately. You can be court martialed for refusing a legal order, depending on the order, (which may or may not carry a felony in civilian life).

Whereas, consulting with Legal Affairs will protect you against action taken against you. Consult with your Legal Affairs Office. Times are tricky. If you are concerned about the legality or propriety of orders, talk to Legal Affairs. Guard yourselves. And guard us.
