I found the UK government's public threat to prosecute a non-citizen (Sally Rooney) over support of an organization entirely legal in her home country a bit strange. States always traditionally shied away from making direct extra-territorial threats about police enforcement of domestic criminal law.

It would be strange if they had actually said that but they didn’t.

It is disgusting. Our government’s protection of Israel is disgusting. Their ongoing abuse of anti-terrorism powers is so blatant.

It's a very unfortunate situation, I've seen the federal government here in Canada abuse anti-terror powers similarly although it has been at a much lower level of seriousness and harm. In the UK all the human rights protections are being quickly extinguished together, by coordinated assault.

They aren’t even trying to hide it anymore. They want people to fear dissent. They know they majority of people are too apathetic to fight it. Scotland is also rapidly descending into the “anti immigrant” lies & people will hand over more rights & more social support for us all, because racism. 😞

Thank god the UK Government is cracking down on the real threat: Irish novelists abroad supporting terrorist organisations. Sally Rooney won’t get away with her dangerous fiction in solidarity 🙄

Yes you'd think that a former DPP might be able to grasp basic jurisprudence wouldn't you? Different country. Different law. I could make get Ted to explain it to him like he does for Dougal with sheep?

The reason is it doesn't do any good, but in this case doubly the reason is that the Republic of Ireland could really do without UK extraterritoriality for a century or two, and Irish people generally support the Palestinian cause to the hilt FOR PRECISELY THESE REASONS.

This is just another example of the "forensic" Starmer and his cack-handed government relentlessly stepping on innocent takes lying in the grass doing NOTHING. They are the masters of the unforced error. You did not have to start an international incident. You could simply have shut your hole.

No one cares about Sally Rooney's political pronouncements enough that you'd look weak if you didn't respond. (You always look weak, you hate it and that's why you responded). Once again Mister Human Rights And The Law of Nations has not just stepped on a rake but buggered himself with it at tea.

The reason it doesn't do any good, to close the earlier thought, is that Ireland isn't going to do anything about Sally Rooney donating her royalties or anything else, she is fully beyond your ordinary jurisdiction, and most of all, the extradition you threaten with a big hullabaloo you don't get.

States never get this and especially the press never gets this... if your extradition gets dragged out by your public attention and tantrums, you don't get it. It is inevitable--he best thing the requesting state can ever do is just don't make it a big deal. Public threats!?

If you've made Sally Rooney _persona non grata_ in the United Kingdom with this threat, and I imagine you have, you have clowned yourself utterly, particularly since authors so rarely go away. They might not be singers, but you've kicked off a confrontation you can't come out on top of. Why?

Well, it started with Kneecap, talk about taking your foot and loading it into the biggest blunderbuss you can find and then crying when the whole thing blows up. Brit politicians are never not at it.

The whole thing has been a litany of unforced error. The suppression is easier to protest than Palestine, for many liberals it's even more offensive, you have brought a massive number of people into contact with PA's actions and their arguments and gained nothing, not one thing

They know they will never convict anyone for anything too, Starmer knows for certain, he's fought governments, he knows they can't win any of it

Difficult to know what he thinks it achieves, he started with trying to ban Kneecap, the man is as right wing as they come.
