Another delightful one is this, showing that life in the outports depended on boats, and since fuel cost dear in poor communities sail was the way, until the road brought the goods to you. Once the road came through the outports this didn't happen, but back then... swahsociety.com/lifestyle/bo...

...if you were a St. John's merchant and you had customers up along the Southwest Arm awaiting deliveries, you'd see the ship notice and arrange for freight for goods to Gooseberry Cove with the captain to his home port.
