The benefit would be the economic gain. Instead they have upset people on all sides whilst tinkering around the edges, demonising the vulnerable, upsetting the old and then u-turning when it backfires. And they are still left where they were a year ago.

The economic benefit would neither be significant enough or immediate enough to assuage people. The LDs haven’t lived down u turning on tuition fees 15 years later, this would be the same. Recent polling shows that cost of living is the biggest issue for people. 1/2

They haven’t demonised the vulnerable, and they haven’t upset the old, the media has. The WFA cut did nothing, cost no lives, and was due to the tories hiding a massive black hole in public finances. We have the fastest growth in the G7 & wage growth at 5%, not really tinkering!

You’ve done a good job of batting back everything I have said today, so how about your turn to explain why Labour isn’t heading for defeat, why it isn’t a huge problem that a near fascist party is leading the polls for the past year and how Labour is going to pull things back?

Fair enough. I can’t answer most of those things though. Labour may be headed for defeat & it is a massive issue that Reform are leading in the polls (although that’s dropping). Only the last one, which is the same as it’s always been. By delivering noticeable improvements in people’s lives.

Labour do that by delivering their manifesto, which they are doing. However, it was always going to be the case that the harder things are done first & take the longest to show effects (rail, water, green energy). They effects ramp up over time, but need time & patience from people.

And if they made a promise which they should not have done the right thing to do is to apologise and to do the right thing, not to stick to the promise and do the wrong thing.

They had to make that promise & they can’t change it, nor do they need to.
