The New York Times @nytimes.com

A condition known as alpha-gal syndrome is changing the way many people shop, cook and eat on Martha’s Vineyard, an island long known as a food-lover’s retreat. A single tick bite can leave people with this life-threatening allergy to most meat and dairy.

Seems like all that collaboration with the KKKristofascists and their climate change denial and attacks on science and our health care might have been a pretty stupid fucking move, huh NYT? But plutocracy uber alles, amirite? #BOYCOTTNYT

Saw a warning about this a few years ago but I guess it didn't matter until it hit a wealthy enclave.

Sooooooo, anyone who gives a damn about life on this planet should sheer these ticks on ^^ we need a lot more people eating a lot less meat. It would revolutionise the world, but habits are hard to kick so if your own body refuses these foods…

I’m glad this syndrome is getting some more attention. It f***ing sucks. Gloat if you will about it forcing people to not eat mammal meat, but it means that milk is right out too, which is a renewable source of protein that poor folks rely on. It also makes people allergic to their own pets.

Fantastic! The more people get bitten, the better! It makes me smile every time I see more and more people get alpha gal. Your “MiLk tHo” argument is idiotic; you act as if lactose intolerance isn’t a reality for the majority of people around the world.

Lactose intolerance is totally a thing. I’M lactose intolerant, but before alpha-gal I could still eat cheese and butter. Now I can’t. That decreases the number of reliable protein sources. And since histamine intolerance came with my case, I can’t eat plant proteins.

Bullshit again, there is no universal histamine intolerance to all plant proteins. Peas, chickpeas, and lentils, are low histamine; with the latter two containing DAO (which degrade histamines)

Not only that but alpha gal is often accompanied by MCAS or histamine intolerance, which narrows the list of food people can eat safely. Doesn’t help that the right kind of food has only gotten more expensive. Many of us are literally starving. This is a public health crisis.

It is, multiple studies have shown that a plant-based diet is cheaper than an omnivore diet…do you want the research evidence?

Alpha-gal Information @alphagal-info.bsky.social

Lone star ticks are not like black-legged ticks for which mainstream tick bite prevention strategies were developed. They require next-level tick-bite avoidance strategies--and most people don't know about these. youtu.be/qC9vMpM3fe8?...

It's pretty wild how a tiny tick bite on Martha’s Vineyard can turn someone’s life upside down with alpha-gal syndrome, making them allergic to meat and dairy, and totally changing how they eat and cook.

Alpha gal is being diagnosed more and more and is very limiting for many sufferers. My mom and my youngest son both have it, as do many others around here.
