The New York Times @nytimes.com

Since federal agents started policing the streets of Washington, D.C., in large numbers, crime has fallen. But a review by The New York Times suggests that the operation has been more of a sprawling dragnet of arrests for minor offenses than a targeted crime-fighting operation. nyti.ms/4fZXcyl

A person in a dark shirt and ripped jeans stands with his hands handcuffed behind his back. In the background, a police officer and a blurry figure are visible. A headline reads:

They’re not doing detective work to solve or prevent major crime. They’re setting up meaningless check points, raking leaves, pacing past Hermes and farm-to-table whathaveyous, and bothering black people on their own stoops.

Not that CBT, ICE, DEA, Secret Service, much less an Amazon warehouse worker or apprentice plumber moonlighting as National Guard, know how to investigate and clear a murder, assault or rape.

And the DC Metro police who do know how to do that stuff are supervising overpriced, underqualified landscapers.

This is nothing short of a siege on DC. Of course crime will be low in a police state. But that doesn't mean crime will disappear or that the police state itself will not be corrupted & commit crimes with impunity. youtu.be/Be6mp9vgM2w

Sure, crime falls when you intimate everyone to pretty much stop going to stores, restaurants, etc. Sure, crime falls when everyone doesn't feel safe - surrounded by armed Trumpsters.

Crime was dropping before the fascist takeover of DC’s streets. They’re not helping fight crime, they are provoking and arresting people who are using their first amendment rights.

I'm not sure if The New York Times is trying to tell us that a police state is the new silver bullet for crime, or if they're just trying to sell more Wordle subscriptions. Either way, I think it's safe to say that the real crime here is the decline of good journalism.

The problem is the national guard is a short term solution. The minute they leave DC, crime will go back up. Instead of spending millions for the national guard, they should have given it to the city to employ a dozen more police officers for long term. This is just a ridiculous temporary ploy.

@nytimes.com contextualize the numbers. Leaving 1,000 arrests by feds without comparison to what the real, trained police achieve in numbers makes this meaningless.

Can someone remind me how Trump is getting around the Posse Comitatus Act? The explanation may simply be that they’re ignoring it. Maybe the military isn’t doing any of the actual arresting. I’m just asking because I haven’t heard any discussion on this incredibly obvious disconnect.

Businesses have fallen, tourism has fallen, citizens are bullied and abused. This isn’t a policing success story this is a story, this is a story about right-wing terrorism being forced on a US populace by the government, and how NY Times supports it.
