The only running requirement I see is that you used to have to run 1.5 miles in 14:21, which is about about a 9.5 minute mile. Still not a high bar but much higher than an 18 minute mile, which is a slightly faster than average walk.

As a long distance hiker I'm painfully aware of walking speeds to the tenth of a mile per hour. This is 3.3 mph, which the vast majority of thru hikers can cruise at, through the mountains, with a full 30 pound load.
