Not mentioned: the NYPD no longer requires officers to be able to run a mile in less than 18 minutes. Tisch is hiring slow, witless recruits, giving them minimal training and handing them a gun. What could go wrong? gothamist.com/news/from-be...

Wait until you hear about ICE and the FBI
Lots of competition with ICE I'm sure
18 minutes? lol
Nope. With minimal searching I found the prior requirement: “1.5-mile run in less than 14 minutes and 21 seconds”. No need to just make stuff up or exaggerate. As of 2/26/2025. https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/news/pr007/more-cops-better-training-commissioner-tisch-new-policies-expand-recruitment-and
Commissioner Reagan would never
If she can't see what a disaster this could turn out to be, then Jess Tisch is blind... 😏
“An 18-minute mile is equivalent to a speed of approximately 3.33 miles per hour (mph). This pace is considered a moderate walking speed.” www.verywellfit.com/walking-and-...
Are they doing an 18 minute mile while hopping on one foot or something? No biggie, not like people walk a lot in NYC or anything.
18? One eight?
18 minutes was the previous standard? I don’t wanna be like, unkind to people who aren’t natural runners but that’s possible walking at a good clip
I'm incredibly fat, and haven't done any serious cardio since I was a high school swimmer two decades ago and I can absolutely walk a mile faster than that.
I was doing sub-11 back when my childhood asthma was real bad. Wtf
An 18-minute mile is known as a “walk”
I’m sorry… the previous bar was one mile in EIGHTEEN (18) minutes‽‽ Eighteen? Like… eight and ten?
I’m a 64 yo woman with bad knees and I can run a mile faster than that. Wtf
18 minute mile? Fast walk gets that done. Recruiting those "keyboard warrior gamers" and giving them an actual gun...pathetic.
That's a brisk walk
I just tested myself at a brisk walk and covered 1.4 miles in the allotted time, that's absolutely pathetic
😅
A mile in 18 minutes is a fast walking pace.
Meritocracy in slow motion, baby...
Holy shit I’m way out of shape and can walk a mile in 15 minutes. Don’t even need to run.
The Army also increased recruits when they dropped their standards.
18 minutes?!?!?! 😆😂🤣🤣🤣
This cannot be correct. A brisk walking pace is 18 mph.
18 mph is a very fast running pace
Ooops yes meant to say 18 minute mile pace.
That's...not a run?
Running a mile in 17:59 is what most people call "walking"
Depicted: new NYPD uniform option, 2028.
That's 3.33 mph or 5.3 kph, which isn't even a particularly fast walking pace. They'd get left in the dust by your average mall-walking grandmother of six.
THAT'S what the requirement used to be? Almost TWENTY MINUTES?! Jesus, no wonder you saw so many fatass cops even before this.
Run?? Today I *walked* three in an hour for a 20 minute per mile pace, and this was my first day back on the treadmill in months. Will smith in mib, here I come!
Em....my normal walk is an 18 minute mile....
At almost 76 years old, I walk 2 miles in 30 minutes. That's 15 minutes a mile. That means, in a chase, I would pull away from NYPD's finest by WALKING!!!
nypdrecruit.com/pages/police...
Is it at all possible that “18 minutes” is a typo (or LLM hallucination)? That seems really… off.
Was using google to calculate how fast that is in terms I understand, and got AI maths
Are they teaching them to aim or nah?
abolition through cardiac arrest
holy shit, an 18 minute mile? does that even qualify as running…?
Waddling
I'm weeks away from 65, not in great shape, and I WALK a couple of miles every day at a faster pace than that.
18 minutes? That was the standard?
i'm sorry, not being able to walk for a mile was too hard of a standard?
Omg, my kids have to run a mile in less than 12 minutes.
I can't find an article confirming the sub 18-minute mile. She, if anything, wanted a 1.5 mile jog done in under 15 minutes.
18 minutes? You can walk a mile in less than 18 minutes
An 18 minute mile works out to 3.3m/h or 5.4km/h. According to this paper, that's not likely to even reach "moderate physical activity" which results in light muscular fatigue and moderate sweating. So people saying they can walk faster are not exaggerating. www.researchgate.net/publication/...
I'm in my 50s and run a 9 1/2 minute mile, and I never felt more like a beast. So, there's that.
That's 3.3 mph. Basically barely higher than a moderate walking pace.
18 minutes.
We used to run from the police as kids/teens and they were good for a block or two, and even then we'd be running backwards sometimes. I thought they were just out of shape. Come to find out they didn't even have a running requirement?! 18 minutes is wild.
I was the next to last guy in cross country in 1965, and I could run 2 1/2 miles in less than that.
I’m 60 years old and one of my regular workouts is a 6 miles ruck in my neighborhood carrying 25 pounds of pack. My miles are faster than this. Jeez.
When I do my exercise walks—& I'm a 69 year-old Boomer—a relaxed pace is a 15- to 16-minute mile. On my stubby 5'4" tall legs. Walk. That's not a run.
My wife walked a 5k today at an average pace of 18 minutes/mile, and she has two bad knees. But to be fair, she wasn't carrying a gun.
That last sentence is perfect lol
Listen, relax! The Presidential Fitness Awards are back... the schools will do it!
“The NYPD is the best police department, the best trained,” according to the current commissioner, the scion of a hardcore Zionist family nypost.com/2025/08/23/u...
She’s also the favored candidate against Mamdani for the real estate/reactionary crowd
18 minutes? That's a brisk walk. The old ladies in my neighborhood do a mile in 18 minutes.
Speaking as an old lady, that walk is barely brisk.
Does that even count as running?
The only running requirement I see is that you used to have to run 1.5 miles in 14:21, which is about about a 9.5 minute mile. Still not a high bar but much higher than an 18 minute mile, which is a slightly faster than average walk.
18 minutes? That's a kind of brisk walk.
That’s the speed of a typical German family (!) on their Saturday or Sunday forest, field or dike hike (usually about 10 km / 6 miles in length)
I had to run a 6 minute mile for high school soccer. High. School. Soccer.
One mile in 18min is walking pace. Another right wing nut version of white supremacy.
I definitely made that pace when my knee gave out and I finished a half marathon speedwalking
Their original requirement was 18 mins? I’m fat, in terrible shape, and slow in general, and I could do that (if I don’t pass out lol). Like 18 mins is essentially a fast walk/SLOW jog.
That is the last running requirement they had. Some of these cops are dumplings now I swear
Dumpling, Equity, and Inclusion
This is funny, but my fatass loves dumplings 😂😂
Same
Which makes no sense to me when you are working in a huge city where the fastest way to move is often times on foot. Honestly 18 mins is pitiful for any law enforcement anywhere.
18 minutes is pitiful for anyone who doesn't have a disability.
No, it was 1.5 miles in 14 minutes. nypost.com/2023/03/01/n...
That makes a hell of a lot more sense.
New Yorkers famously walk about 4 mph. That means it takes us 15 minutes to walk a mile. How could it possibly take one longer to run it?
This is what I came to post. My natural walking speed is a mile every 19.2 mins (5km per hour). I have no running ability so I could do the 18 minute requirement without trying.
thats not even a fast walk
I'm 66. I can WALK a mile in well under 18 minutes.
I’m sorry what? I can fast walk a mile in under 18, jeeezus
I literally walked a mile in under 14 minutes today, after running 18 miles. I am 54 years old. At least I know I can still outrun NYPD if I need to
Cops are already under trained in this country.
If you’re that age, and you can’t run a mile in under 18 minutes, you’re near death.
An 18 minute mile is slower than walking🐛
What?! I'm a stumpy 5' 1" and I've been running 3.5 miles in 50 minutes at my gym (that I only joined earlier this summer)
The standard was 1.5 miles in 14:21, which is a 9:34 mile.
"Did you walk in under your own power? You did? Hired"
I’m on Medicare and walk faster than that! WTF?
18 minutes!!!? I can walk it in 18 min!!
I ran the mile in 18 minutes in high school for the annual fitness test and they made me do it again because they were convinced I’d just walked it instead. Joke was on them though - I really was just that slow
Ali, where are you seeing that? Last I heard, it was the equivalent of a ten-minute mile, maybe less.
Yeah, “not mentioned”? So how about mentioning it? This is what the other side does. Facts, please.
Not mentioned because Ali didn't write the fucking article. Reading comprehension: it's fannntastic.
Yeah. So make a claim, then link to something that doesn't support it. fannntastic.
I'm overweight and eligible for senior discounts but I can run an 18 minute mile.
Good grief! I’m 60 and *walk* a mile in 15 minutes ffs
...18 minutes??? I can *walk* a mile in 18 minutes!
Sure, an 18 minute mile sounds slow, but don't forget they're also carrying all of that racial resentment and daddy issues.
As a long distance hiker I'm painfully aware of walking speeds to the tenth of a mile per hour. This is 3.3 mph, which the vast majority of thru hikers can cruise at, through the mountains, with a full 30 pound load.
My wife is 75 years old and she walks a mile in 18 minutes. I guess if you want to escape the police in NYC just run up a set of steps.
I, my friend and her dog walk a mile in about 18 minutes, and that's with letting the dog sniff the pee-grams along the way.
Also the dog is a 12yo Golden Doodle with a limp.
I was just about to say I can do a mile in less than 18 minutes and I’m 67.
RUN a mile in 18 minutes??!!!! Jesus! Where's the mile, straight up the really steep bit of the north face of the Eiger? That's 3 and a bit mph, average walking pace for a not particularly fit adult.
Hopefully you meant under 8 minutes
