Decided to try to escape the heat by hitting to the coast. It was still toasty until the high winds kicked in, making for a lovely day with clear skies. Pacifica & Half Moon Bay were chaos, but AƱo Nuevo State Park was so quiet! Saw a couple dozen elephant seals, and all the birds. #PublicLands

Photo looking south along bluffs and coastline. Small rocky island in foreground has lots of cormorants sitting in it. Zoomed in photo looking south along bluffs and coastline, steep cliffs being eroded by the waves. Photo looking north along bluffs and coastline. Foreground is filled with a variety of green shrubs and other plant life. A flock of brown pelicans is resting on a sandbar just off shore. Small sandy beaches along water's edge in the distance has elephant seals lounging around. Photo looking inland toward the other side of Rt 1. Hillside and ridge line burn areas are visible from past wildfire.

It was nice seeing people out enjoying the park even during its off season. Except that one kid who kept trying to catch a pelican. Pretty sure it had some kind of injured wing. Not sure if the adults just weren't paying attention or didn't care 😠

if you haven't done it, i highly recommend the guided tour with the AƱo Nuevo staff. you walk around in the dunes, creeping up on elephant seal pods (from a safe distance). it's educational and fun.
