One reason for this, potentially, is that we tend to tell the same set of stories about prehistory over and over, and the largest predators of island South America being archosaurs (croc-line and dinosaur-line) well into the Cenozoic is a little awkward if that's suppose to be the "age of mammals"

Even worse, the largest Cenozoic predators in South America have been snakes, even to this day.
