Readers like me "who do not feel aligned" with Washington Post's future plans have considered and taken the subscription bail-out decision.
Readers like me "who do not feel aligned" with Washington Post's future plans have considered and taken the subscription bail-out decision.
Lmao, “we want to make it more appealing to, and trusted by, today’s audiences, so we want to incorporate AI into everything”
Isnt their position supposed to be honest news reports? Just asking
"I Think You Should Leave" by Will Lewis
You sure about that?
As much as I loathe the NYT, I would much rather see Philip Bump (the only WaPo journalist I pay any heed) there rather than the pathetic sinking ship that is Bezos' rag. Please tell you fascist editors to offer Philip a job as a show of enlightened balance, Ben.
Rapid expansion of AI across all their platforms, hmmm...
Just cancelled my subscription. Had it for ten years. Told them I didn't like the content.
Never thought I would see the day when WaPo might well turn out to become less reputable than the NY Post. Or the Daily Mail. Or the National Inquirer.
Every newspaper is buy. You just have to figure if you want the buy in or the buy out.
Shorter: “We’re turning ourselves into the D.C. version of the New York Post, and any of you that don’t like it can fuck off.”
Like Politico doesn’t already exist
I can’t think of a mainstream news outlet that isn’t rightwing in the orientation of its senior leadership. Kudos to the Post for making it clear to the public, I guess.
These days, even Politico is better than the WaPo.
We subscribed for 34years. When we traveled we would have the house sitter save the papers for us and I would read them when we returned. Several years ago, the content and quality had declined so much that I wanted to ditch it but hubs objected. Then came their shitty coverage of Biden and one day,
he saw a headline so egregious that he said yeah let’s unsubscribe. Never looked back, never regretted it.
How does this newspaper even exist anymore?
Subscribe to @theguardian.com if you want good national and international news without the fascism glow-up
As a former reader not aligned with these new plans, I continue to have zero regrets about my decision to cancel my subscription.
Same.
Sounds like self-deportation to me
🤮.
No way they get any MAGA subscribers no matter what they do short of becoming the NY POST. And then lose the rest of the progressives, ones who have not yet cancelled.
Jesus - a “newspaper journalist’s chosen path” must be reporting the news and not putting a spin on it. Sadly this newspaper, with its great history, will soon be dead.
Utterly vile and shameful. “Reinvention journey” is BS-speak that The Post’s remaining shred of integrity will die by AI. Katharine Graham is spinning in her grave.
The future plans apparently involve turning the Washington Post into the New York Post.
Every day I become a little more smug about cancelling.
Looks like a death spiral to me . Or maybe Bezos can’t pay his wedding bills.
Rethink to be bootlickers?
I didn’t feel aligned as a subscriber and canceled awhile ago. Pretty happy with this path too.
Funny, most of their one time subscribers "do not feel aligned" with the company's present plans. Which is why circulation, print and online, has fallen precipitously. Unfortunately, time to let it crumble and fail. It is now mostly a vehicle for sanewashing and normalizing fascism.
"Democracy dies in full daylight via corporate email blasts."
“If you won’t help launder a fascist dictator then you may not feel welcome here anymore”.
You mean SIR William John Lewis, British media executive? Exactly WHAT does Sir Bill know about traditional American values!?
"Timeless American values". Isn't Will Lewis a Brit? Who worked for and whose career was shaped by Rupert Murdoch. Another foreigner. Neither Will Lewis nor Rupert Murdoch have any allegiance to our country or our democracy. Neither does Jeff Bezos it turns out. bsky.app/profile/benm...
Out of curiosity, does Will Lewis, or Mr. Bezos, plan on ever apologizing to the generations of readers they used to have for destroying one of the most important journalistic institutions in American history?
Not a chance in the world of that happening.
Why don’t they replace Will Lewis with AI?
I mean…is this for subscribers, too? Does he know who reads (or used to) The Post? This only validates my decision to cancel and never, ever renew my subscription. These bloodless opportunists care about nothing, stand for nothing, fall for everything, and will perish (thankfully) as a result.
You know, the plans where they replace journalism with servility to oligarchs and corporate interests.
Trusted??? Lmao
in what kind of fantasy world could this guy claim they are doing anything to "defend democracy"? there's no way to claim that unless you think "democracy" is "only the white men get to vote, as it should be"
An Orwellian one
The Washington Post most people historically know no longer exists. The Katharine Graham Washington Post no longer exists. The Ben Bradlee Washington Post is no more.
Sorry pal, but The NY Times isn’t the bastion of holding truth to power either. The way that changes is for current journalists there holding their employers accountable.
I don't know -anyone-who thinks the New York Times is any better at this point. And also, whether in journalism or government or most other areas of endeavor, there comes up point where "changing the system from within" ceases to be possible and thus becomes mere enabling.
“Traditional subscription fatigue” lmao did he really sell anyone that the massive unsubscribes this year were normal business?
They should all quit. At least a couple should quit after punching Lewis's lights out.
Bezos is now full-on MAGA
“to continue to defend democracy” what a joke
Sounds like Hell.
It’s like the Twitter disaster. If you’re not here for maximum f**kery, we encourage you to take the severance.
Are they trying to bankrupt the paper if they get rid of any decent legacy riders nobody’s gonna subscribe I’ve ditched mine a long time a are they trying to bankrupt the paper if they get rid of any decent legacy riders nobody’s gonna subscribe. I ditched mine a long time ago
I mistakenly thought "Democracy dies in darkness" was a slogan but now realize it was a mission statement.
Democracy dies in Darkness. I just never expected WaPo to be the one unscrewing the light bulb!
For a few years WAPO was better than the NYT, imo, so the change Is a great loss
WaPo will die under this management.
under this ownership
Every warning is a promise if you’re ambitious enough!
It was aspirational. Some aspirations are aligned with the fascists.
Democracy’s not just dying on its own. bezos is helping to murder it.
We need to get Mackenzie Scott to set up a multi-billion endowment for a new Washington Post. Encourage all of the Post staff to take the buyout and then hire them for the New Post. Get an independent board to oversee the organization and hire a respected editorial staff.
Did isnt even american
“(T)o reconnect with our audience and continue to defend democracy. Sure. Right.
The WaPo is a dead man walking.
This seems to be a pretty wordy way of saying "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." I canceled late last year after three non-endorsement after 22 years. No regrets at all.
“Continue to defend democracy”? How about START to defend democracy? Instead of asking the fascists how they take their tea and would they like some cake?
Stop reading wp.
Those future plans being entirely promoting fascist propaganda. bsky.app/profile/benm...
Canceling your Post subscription doesn’t really hurt Bezos much. There needs to be a concerted boycott of Amazon, as painful as that may be for some people who have become addicted to its convenience.
“…reinvention journey to make The Washington Post more appealing to, and trusted by, Donald Trump who we need to pander to and fellate as often as possible, so that he doesn’t say mean things about us on social media platforms”. I fixed Will’s statement to reflect the actual truth.
Are we sure Will didn't have a ghostwriter who rhymes with Chafe Deeznuz?
I don't read wapo anymore.
Sucks to suck
Hmm, "timeless American values" sounds OK - why are people seemingly not "aligned" with the new plans? Somehow I don't think that Lewis is telling the whole story in this email.
Reconnect with our audience? They wouldnt even have to worry about that if they hadnt driven off their audience in the first place by lurching towards Trump and the oligarchy that Bezos lives in.
For once, I would like them to say who/what they are "protecting democracy" from. Put a name to it and then act accordingly. Otherwise, it's just empty fluff, replaceable by whatever AI decides to insert their next.
So they'll no longer be interested in actual reporting, just right wing opinion pieces.
Does it count as an opinion if an AI generated it?
What a letter! Lots of classic phrases and lines! My favorite: "embracing AI rapidly across all our workflows" LOL
shitty robots: famous for increasing consumer trust!
🤮
More appealing to today's audience... If you don't like my principles, I have others more aligned to yours.
JFC
The company’s future as a monthly newsletter.
I love how the fascist always say “defend our democracy“ when they mean the opposite. it’s like it’s code or something.
it's such blatant gas-lighting hypocrisy. they're refusing to own what they're doing. it's all a big charade these people play.
Sounds like they're hoping for tabloid status.
Sanewashing fascist anti-democracy illiberal values just ain’t it Will, you fucking rube.
Hey @washingtonpost.com , I hope you understand your voluntary separation offer applies to subscribers. Bye bye.
IOW, the subscription losses are hurting the business and layoffs are probably planned but they don’t want to admit it and really hope a lot of people leave on their own so the bad economic news doesn’t come out
What is @washingtonpost.com future?? Not journalism? Not truth? Democracy does die in darkness, and the demise of the post really is tragic. Bezos is an oligarch. #BoycottAmazon
Democracy dies in the hands of billionaires.
Unless you want to be fed propaganda and make Bozo richer…cancel ur subscription.
These buyouts and layoffs aren’t because Bezos can’t afford WP. It’s a move to turn it into an AI experiment. What a sad fate, by a moron, for what was once the best newspaper in the country.
I would definitely take the buyout.
He fails to mention that this reinvention journey has been a colossal failure.
also fails to mention *journalism* as being a part of their strategy
New Coke with "a light patina of fascism". (Thanks, @babrahamse.bsky.social)
Did Lewis sign his letter, “Heil Trump”?
bsky.app/profile/bilb...
Here’s what I considered: I cancelled my subscription. Screw this guy.
..."timeless American values..." seems kinda White Nationalistic, doesn't it? In line with Make America Like It Was when women stayed home, businesses were lead by WASPs, etc. We are not dumb, WaPo. Consider cancelling your subscriptions, people
Already did. WaPo is dead to me
Timeless American values like racism and murder.
“If we want to reconnect with our audience and continue to DEFEND democracy, more changes at The Post will be necessary.” Dude spelled THWART wrong. Fucking embarrassing. Dam u otto erect! #ResistFascism
"today's audiences" 🤪
I see they’re still running obituaries.
"Voluntary separation" such a GOOP-ass phrase
I consciously uncoupled from my subscription on account of their obsequity. Will light a snatch scented candle to celebrate
Somehow worse than the worst LinkedIn post
Defend democracy lol
Odd. I never figured that fascism was a “timeless American value.” The things you learn these days. Or maybe it’s Will Lewis that needs to take that buyout offer.
Does Will Lewis get increasing bonuses for decreasing readership?
It’s working GREAT @washingtonpost.com paid average daily circulation “down to 97,000, w 160,000 Sundays. a fraction of the 250,000 avg in 2020 , when the Post was one of the largest newspapers in the country by circulation.”
@washingtonpost.com is Murdoch Gutter Media
Who writes this nonsense.
I really want to know what he things "timeless American values are," and who he thinks best represents them.
The only American value that has stood since your countries inception is slavery, so probably that. Also, hang all slavers.
Racism and all other forms bigotry that keep mediocre white men at the top
pre magna carta
Handmaid's Tale and Republican men probably
It is not useful to interrogate fascists
Based on the likely outcomes of their policies, I'd describe the Republican agenda this way: 1) Identify as Christians, while ignoring the teachings of Jesus. 2) Own the liberals. 3) Glorify cruelty. 4) Hasten the death of life on this planet.
Considering that he's English and holds a knighthood, guessing going back to George III.
Slavery. It’s slavery.
The nerve to say that as a fucking Brit too
My first thought!
He originally wrote “timeless Tory values” but consultants caught it in time…
More appealing AND TRUSTED? Are you kidding? The Washington Post is Faux Lite
Yeah we’re going to need more specifics about those “timeless American values.”
I’m not aligned, but I am also not an employee. I will take the no buy decision.
@karaswisher.bsky.social
Can I quit my WaPo subscription again, even if I cancelled it at the beginning of the year? I feel like once isn't enough.
Encourage other subscribers to quit. You now have the potential to cancel 100s of times. Let the good times roll!
@washingtonpost.com is a complete joke. What a utter disappointment they have become.
Their games aren’t even any good.
I know there are a small number if people who need Amazon to survive, but if you don't and you give them money anyway then you are directly fueling fascism
My subscription finally expires in October and will never be renewed.
After reading/subscribing to WP from early 90s, I became disillusioned with it in 2023 when Lewis took over. Stayed for a year bc there were some great journalists/reporting. Bezos asserting himself on WP editorial was last straw. Glad I cancelled as paper slips more & more to a Brit-styled tabloid.
Based on the web traffic to the Washington Post website. The first sentence of this email has been a colossal failure.
I can't believe the right-wing nonsense coming out of the @baltimoresun.bsky.social editorial department now.
In other words, we couldn’t care less about our staff, silly peasants.
Bummer for those employees who would like to continue working there, but have already been identified by management as being “unaligned.”
I encourage every staff member to accept.
You can’t “continue” to defend democracy if you are actively trying to destroy democracy. Readers who love their country do not feel aligned with the Washington Post’s robust defense of and support for fascism.
"Appealing to" and "most trusted" are not compatible these days.
You gotta love working for a company and getting an email like this. “We’re weak and rudderless. You know we’re weak and rudderless and don’t like it. We don’t want to hear about it and won’t do anything to fix it.” Losers.
“In order to …continue to defend democracy…” Sure, buddy.
Wow. The Washington Post? THE Washington Post? Of Watergate fame? I know it's been a long slow slide from those heady days but...woof
Actually it’s been pretty sudden and sharp to be honest. It was still a good paper 4 years ago.
Beg to differ. As a former subscriber -for 34 years! - I had seen a noticeable slide in content and quality for a decade or so.
I dunno. Does a 'good paper' find itself in a position to issue a mea culpa for helping usher the US into war in Iraq?
Yep. As a Marylander in the UK, I read it regularly until a few years ago.
I unsubscribed because of this turkey's "reinvention". Continuing it will not bring me back
So they're telling staff to take a buy-out if they're not willing to suck orange dick?
And Bezos' dick - and Will's dick. To stay at WaPo now you need to be a real cocksucker for journalism.
What’s this “continue to defend Democracy“ bit doing in there?
Ah, glad I cancelled. There are excellent journalists at the Post, but this editorial direction pushed me over the edge
Ditto.
Cancelled in November 2024!
Yet another product brought low by bosses conflating “the user/subscriber” with “me, the people I talk to, and the hallucinations of the marketing guys”.
Todays audience? What does he mean by that I had a post subscription for 40 years and cancelled after the “op-ed” change. Have they added any new subscribers compared to those that left.
I'm part of Today's Audience because I had the poor judgement to pay for a full year up front. My subscription runs out in September, at which time I'll become part of Yesterday's Audience.
He means Donald, and Jeff, and maybe a dozen other people.
He means Twitter trolls. CEOs (and sadly many journalists) actually think they accurately reflect the wider society.
Translation - if you have a shred of decency and a mind of your own still at this point, we’d ask that you not stick around for what comes next.
That is so bleak.
hedging that fund
Objectivity is gone.
Bezos is a fascist and an oligarch, a disgusting excuse for a human being with zero compassion or empathy. He only cares about himself and his money. How many children could have been fed with the money wasted to satisfy his vanity in Venice? #ProveMeWrong
Will Lewis signals to the remaining few subscribers, encouraging those who do not feel aligned with the company’s future plans to consider cancelling their subscriptions to the Post.
"more appealing and more trusted" What a line of absolute bullshit.
Get out while you still can staff members
Ominous. What do they mean by appealing to "today's audiences"?
This is so corporate-speak. It's just disappointingly transparent. For a once-respected news organization. RIP.
So many Quislings
As long as the names "Will Lewis" and "Jeff Bezos" are affixed to the Washington Post, this long-time subscriber won't touch the rag.
You’re so much more forgiving than I am.
I hope everyone fucking quits. This is just straight up “we want to be Fox News but with ai”
We want to be Fox News, but continue to pretend we're the same publication that published Woodward and Bernstein's investigative reports. Pathetic.
I hope everyone leaves. Management under Lewis & Bezos is awful. I unsubscribed awhile ago.
Show me the last time they “defended” democracy. I originally read it as defund democracy. Almost makes more sense.
Reading that makes me wish I could unsubscribe again, but to the billionth power.
POS. RIP WaPo.
This will surely bankrupt this company
A newspaper declaring they are "embracing AI rapidly across all of our workflows" has to be the reddest flag to ever red flag.
Yeah.. I’d like them to explain more about that. Who the heck is going to subscribe to an AI written paper??
Certainly not living, breathing humans. 🙄
"traditional subscription fatigue" is why Wapo has lost hundreds of thousands of subscribers. not you know, covering everything with a light patina of fascism
they lost 250,000 subscribers
(I think that's an undercount of nearly 150,000)
Lewis is just hoping Wapo can be as influential on the current addle-minded boob in the White House as Weekly World News was on Ronald Reagan.
Greed derangement syndrome
The Washington Post embraces the Darkness.
Hey, Will Lewis, stop messing with my hometown paper. Also, you're still wanted over here for your role in phone hacking - Scotland Yard wants a word. (Both are possible because I'm a Marylander living in the UK)
Somehow I don't think that is going to convince me to resubscribe!
“…our chosen path is not for everyone.” Yeah, like all the subscribers who have cancelled. Signed, A former subscriber
So glad I canceled @washingtonpost.com last year.
Same
I cancelled the minute Bezos hired that asshole from the UK.
Later it will be referred to as "the 'Fork in the Post' email". It's done.
Bezos and Lewis are the functional equivalent of the 737 MAX’s MCAS system. Every time anyone at the paper tries to pull up out of the dive, they push the controls down and throttle up
Dear Washington Post, You can not defend democracy and support an authoritarian regime. Wake the hell up. Kind regards, Tens of millions of Americans
They're not fooling anyone. "Voluntarily Separation Program" is just resigning. Stupid corporate buzzwords designed to soften and obfuscate the truth.
Did anybody else notice that when they talked about the future of The Washington Post they forgot to mention journalism, reporting, or stories as a key part of their strategy?
No investigative journalism any longer. Takes people & time & money.
Tackling subscription fatigue by fully embracing AI definitely tells me your ability to read a room.
Katherine Graham is rolling over as we speak.
Trump fluffing or the door in Bezos land.
"Champion timeless American values" good godamighty
My subscription ends in 3 weeks. Good riddance
Take the money and run!
How, as a Post staffer, can I make an informed decision on a bunch of platitudes? What exactly is your plan, Bezoar?
same energy
imagine aspiring to be the USA Today of the nation's capital democracy dies in meh
USA Today has a much better editorial board, and gannett sites don’t put a bunch of ai slop in my face
(yet)
This letter doesn’t even make sense from a strategic perspective.
It makes sense if you're turning the Post into a fascist propaganda rag
Interesting. I don't feel aligned with the company's future plans and my cancelled subscription becomes effective next month.
I also exercised my option under the subscriber Voluntary Separation Program. Unfortunately I paid up-front for a full year that doesn't end until September.
I knew I’d find somebody in my exact boat on here.
Me, last July.
Ditto.
I put in the cancellation order in November; subscription runs out next month. But I got a "your subscription will auto-renew on 4 August" email, so Imma hafta call them.
Saw the handwriting on the wall and canceled mine months ago.
I said Buh Bye sometime during Buzbee's tenure. And Baldos actually made it exponentially worse. SMH. Maybe really really rich people shouldn't own press outlets, full stop. 🤔
It’s terrible that all our major media is owned by the very wealthy.
It's terrible, but it's always been true. I guess in the old days local papers in small towns had owners who weren't oligarchs, but at the same time those papers were typically pretty reactionary.
Do you mean oligarchs?
That's always been the case. Citizen Kane was a portrayal of William Randolph Hearst, owner of a vast newspaper empire and one of the richest men in the nation and Joseph Pulitzer, his rival in New York. And then we have Rupert Murdoch who took over 3 countries' with conservative news
Which is why Reagan was either a fool, a tool, or both in terms of letting the Fairness Doctrine lapse.
The Fairness Doctrine had nothing to do with ownership and constitutionally could not apply to print, cable, or internet.
Wut? That old FCC policy for local broadcast has nothing at all to do with this.
Often at a loss. Sometimes because the owners believe in the product and want to sustain it, sometimes because they want to be able to nudge (or neuter) the content, sometimes because they think they are media Jesus and all it takes to be profitable is their magic touch and business acumen.
Me too. I canceled when Bezos overruled the editorial board on the Harris endorsement,
So DOGE
Why aren't there any 'good' oligarchs? F Bezos and Lewis. Greed and unfettered capitalism is ruining everything. Sux.
There goes that paper. Just burn it down, people. It's now worthless.
Lewis is a product of the Rupert Murdoch and Conrad Black orgs. Anyone expecting impartial journalism from a paper he runs is a fool. And so is anyone expecting it from his current boss
"...and in order to see if you're aligned, we plan to hack your phone and lie to the cops about. You have been warned."
The second sentence should read, "Obviously, we have completely failed."
Looking at the subscriber numbers, readers aren't aligned with the papers' future.
This is why my subscription will expire next month and will not be renewed.
With a change of a few words, this could have just as easily been written as a voluntary self-deportation letter from ICE. There’s only one response or action to defend “american values” and it has nothing to do with your papers organization.
Yep, gotta be a card carrying fascist
Lol bro saw the fork in the road email and said yes that is a good way to lead. Remarkable
I only wish I could super-unsubscribe
Take the money you were spending on them, and use it to support a journalist who does share your values. They’ll appreciate it a lot more than Bezos. I’m fond of @keribla.bsky.social, @taylorlorenz.bsky.social, @404media.co, and @jamesstout.bsky.social
You have good taste in journalists haha
I wish I had a way to force them to pay me every month to compensate me for their shittiness.
You know who’s not aligned with The Post’s future plans? Its readers and ex-readers. Fox News viewers are aligned with its plans, but they don’t read newspapers.
🎯
And they will never, ever be convinced that WaPo isn't radical leftist propaganda. I assume the plan is to promote fascism, profits be damned. Otherwise, this is idiotic.
Bezos doesn’t need the newspaper money do he doesn’t care I frikkin’ care that now we don’t have a local paper with local news. All we’ve got is Moonie Times & Nazi Post and sometimes you just want to know about metro closings and a review of the show that just opened at the Warner.
Try @51st.news or @washingtonian.com
Followed the Washingtonian, although I will always associate it with the “100 Things to do in DC” issue that came out March 2020. Whoops.
Didn't need that last word, my friend.
Precisely so.
That’s capitalism baby, they should love it!
But whuttabout midwestern diners ???
Well, they do read The Epoch Times.
I have a journalism degree. I spent 15 years in community newspapers. Places like @thewashingtonpost.bsky.social used to be considered a dream job or “the big leagues.” Now, it’s trying its hardest to polish Trump’s rim. Post’s owner is a POS and Post leadership is complicit or cowardly.
The bit about "subscription fatigue" oof. Blaming your consumers for your shitty margins is one way to describe this.
Or maybe charging $900 a year for the print edition, which is now the front page and one other section with everything else
So the post will become the national inquirer. Got it.
It’s pretty rich for a British tabloid guy to wax on about “timeless American values.” The fact that he’s still employed there is a complete indictment of the paper.
I notice that the "new direction" is soft peddled and anything but explicit -- but I am late to this.
If he thinks he has made the WaPo more trusted, he really needs to check the cancellation rates. I wouldn’t trust them to report the weather correctly.
Does he think WaPo still has an audience? Cuz MAGA doesn’t read and if they did it wouldn’t be WaPo.
I can smell the bullshit all the way up in Boston.
Does this mean they won't sane wash the president anymore, or they're going full fascist. The wording is a little murky.
I canceled my Post subscription for the same reason.
Me too. But every Amazon box that still lands on my doorstep fuels the Post's demise.
Jeff Bezos spent about 60% of the Post's annual budget on his wedding. "continue to defend democracy" my ass....
Once a paper of record, and one I subscribed to, the @washingtonpost.com is now just a useless rag and vanity project for Bezos. An absolute piece of crap where democracy goes to die.
They used the semicolon wrong.
I noticed that
The company’s future plan to go bankrupt by catering to an audience of one?
"If you're disinclined to support our technofacist mission, resign." Bang up job, Bezos.
so loyalty pledge?
