We need a campaign to sing the praises of the ECHR and human rights in general. We needed one ten years ago but we really need it now.

Perhaps we should just offer everyone the individual right to be treated as if they are in the ECHR or not for the next ten years. If greater than 50% of people are prepared to go the next ten years without those rigths at the end of the 10 years we leave the ECHR.

And we allow people to flip back once after experiencing it.

If have a similar game of chicken to play with the small boats... just give Reform control of the asylum system now so everyone can see what a sh** job they do.

Honestly, pointing at a graph or reality makes no difference to these people. They want out of the echr because they got the asylum system they voted for. There is no thought past "don't like foreign"

Those who have already made up their might to hate it are mostly not going to change their minds; the goal must be to galvanize and harden the majority who support it, hence normalizing support with a view to swaying a proportion of undecideds.

I’m not sure - maybe for a start find 6 really clear positive things the ECHR has done which help ‘normal people’ and blast them everywhere.

The people who want to leave do not belive they will be negativity impacted. It's very brexity

I'm just not sure that works. These are people that threw away the much more tangible benefits, to them at least, of being in the EU.

I bet you if you do that the vast majority of the people who would say they want to leave the ECHR would not be able to pick one, but would still say they would want to leave the ECHR. It's not a decision they make with their heads but with their emotions.

Agreed but most people instinctively support it (see polling was about 56% support I think) but they need to be galvanized.

That’s why I think a positive support. Picking holes in the arguments of those who want it scrapped will probably fail.

I largely feel, like Brexit, the best thing to do is not engage with the argument because it's like arguing with flat earthers (if only Cameron had done that with Brexit).

Hmmm. I agree perhaps not to argue, but they are already arguing and have all the media bandwidth they need, and are leading the polls, so I think something proactive needs to be done.

Yes, point out they are Putin appeasers, that their Brexit has failed, that they are Trump's friends and asset strippers. In short, stop being nice.

They'll just pivot to saying it's about removing asylum seekers and the UK has good protections for those other things (a trick they pulled in Brexit) and it will just reinforce peoples emotional reason for leaving.

The importance of human rights should be clear to anyone who looks at a country where they don’t have them, e.g. Putin’s Russia.

But it is not! That’s the problem. Too many people still think that people like them have no need of them - they are for foreigners, activists and trouble makers.

Not with the media we’ve got, no chance. Failed to report Brexit accurately, or Covid, or Tory destruction, now they give staggering air time to both Reform & the minor issue of immigration. Truth can’t compete with our media.
