Why did they ever think he turned his front to them? Hating the same people isn’t about caring for each other. In fact if your motivation is hate it’s very unlikely you will care for people.

The only problem with this metaphor is that it suggests they once had his front—though I suppose in a more crass rhetorical sense they still do.
They see how the camp in TX was treated. Do they think Rep care about a Dem state? But they never learn.
To be fair, they made their decision in November, several months before the camp in TX flooded, but there were plenty of other warning signs. And Maryland, thank God, is top-heavy with an (sub)urban population to marginalize the votes of the reckless rurals
