I think it may be more basic than that. Some of them are just addicted to the attention and sense of affirmation. Even if it's just bots all the way down, they still *feel* good when a tweet does big numbers. They won't give that up.

Other players in the indie media game (404, the onion) can’t shut up about how useless Twitter is for promotion now and how Bluesky is one of the few sites left that delivers clicks, I think if anything the reason he’s so obsessed is he wants to promote on this site
