"Customer service" has been enshittifying irrespective of the development of automations, there's no substantial market for it. We had erosion of quality long before AI was a thing, maybe stop blaming the tool and start blaming the providers.

AI will be a strong force multiplier for all sort of enshittification and predation, but you're right, all those things existed before. It's just not a good time for there to be more tools that can be used against us.

The forces working to use it against us have more money and power and will. AI alone is cool, but it's the intersection of AI and 2020s era capitalism and crumbling institutions that's the problem.

I think you're wrong, maybe I'm overly optimistic but the key that most miss is AI is intent driven, it doesn't act on its own. People still outnumber institutions. AI is a force multiplier that can be used to enable the many, to empower. The future is asymmetric, just not in the way you think.

You're right, optimism vs. pessimism underpin the debate. If you think things are going well and people are in practice empowered while I think the opposite, it's unlikely either of us will be convinced we're wrong.

The only thing I'm ever certain of is that nothing is certain. I can say with confidence that pessimism to that extent is entirely counterproductive.

We were optimistic about how social media would change society when in hindsight skepticism and discretion could have helped us. We have a model for how AI will be weaponized. We don't have certainty, but also it's not responsible to assume it will be a net positive without evidence that's likely.
