ok east coasters: what did you think the earthquake actually was?
ok east coasters: what did you think the earthquake actually was?
the earth shook because of woke.
okay so i definitely felt something. a large truck drove by my building as it started but that’s never had an effect before and the shaking continued long after it was gone. it was very slight but it had the same building-on-jello feel as other earthquakes i’ve experienced.
Big truck
an earthquake. I have a colleague a few miles away who thought it was a plane crashing
Ours down here in 2020 I thought my grade schooler was bouncing around in the living room while her mom was still asleep, and I was about to tell her to cut it out when all the dishes started rattling.
Either an earthquake or the Astoria ConEd account exploding again
A truck at first but it went too long so I figured quake. I'm far though (Massachusetts)
DEI.
😂
I thought it was pointing & facing work being done on my apt. bldg & management forgot to inform residents (which is normal).
Felt it in Maryland. Visibly shook my monitor for about 30 seconds. Figured it was an earthquake. Was initially disappointed to see nothing on the USGS site. And then BAM! 4.8 in NJ and I was affirmed =)
felt it in DC
DEI
There was a siren down my street as it was happening so I assumed my police chief called in the APC or something
An earthquake.
The pipes in my very old house
a friend lives underneath the amtrak viaduct in astoria and they thought "wow the trains haven't ever made the house shake like that"
What earthquake
There was actually a big truck going by at the time, but then it just…kept happening
In RI. Big truck and then when it kept going for several seconds, thought earthquake or possibly the Washington Bridge falling down at last.
we had an earthquake!?
central NJ
Really high winds > big truck > a convoy of big trucks > convoy of something bigger than trucks > oh, earthquake? > earthquake! > what do i do? oh, its over already. (As felt in NJ.)
I thought it was an earthquake, or that my building was collapsing.
Noisy train
I live off a trucking-heavy highway & 100% thought it was a truck until I realized the heaviest shaking was coming from behind me - my garage/mudroom - so then I wondered if my HVAC system was catastrophically failing. 🤷🏼♀️
I didn’t feel it and frankly I feel cheated! The alert on my phone scared the shit out of me, though!
not an east coaster any more but the last one (2012?) in philly, at first i thought “wow the subway” but then realized my building wasn’t above a subway, then “big truck?” then i looked up and saw the facade of the building rippling like a wave and “omg earthquake” and backed into the hallway
Nothing! I didn’t feel it
The over-active boiler in our Philly airbnb
I thought it was a very hard gust of wind, but there was no wind, and the house and I have seen some wind and it never made the couch feel like it was moving.
Big truck
Doing an load of laundry and thought my washing machine was off balance
poltergeist :/
The subway!
hollow earth aliens had an experiment that went awry
there was an earthquake?
They were doing road work outside and wearing hearing protection so I thought they had jackhammered and hit something affecting the house.
Thought our boiler exploded, or something collapsed during construction next door.
Thought someone was drilling upstairs and I was super annoyed 🤣 (the upstairs apt sounds like an eternal construction zone so that’s where my mind went). Had no idea it was an earthquake!
I thought it was an earthquake. Something in the region of 5. (I survived a 7.6 before that killed tens of thousands. There is no mistaking an earthquake above 4 for anything else.)
The gates of Hell opening to finally receive their favored Trump.
I lived in a house once where if you were in one part of the house you'd feel all the tremors but if you were anywhere else you wouldn't feel any, so we all thought one family member was mad until someone else was sitting there during a tremor
my washing machine loaded horribly wrong. (but I had not actually started laundry)
big truck
Wind, weird airplane stuff, and then: earthquake
My block in the Bronx still has a lot of houses that use heating oil and the delivery trucks are VERY LOUD and RUMBLY so I thought it was one of those. (I don't know why I thought they'd be delivering heating oil in April.)
My house has heating oil and we always get our last delivery of the season in April, so you're not crazy!
earthquakes in NY do not inspire rational thoughts
I said earlier that when one happened in 2013, in VA, I had that exact series of thoughts. One part of my brain said, "Earthquake," and the rest of my brain flatly refused to accept that perfectly rational answer. It's why I remember it so well. It was a really odd set of feelings/experience.
F train
Initially, a desperate cat stuck under the bed.
definitely thought my radiator about to explode until the entire room started shaking
heavy work train passing through the subway station
an unbalanced clothes washer/dryer situation
😔
We first went to the window to see what kind of truck could be this disruptive. Did not see any trucks.
An earthquake.
