CBS News quietly updated their story. I still don’t understand how WaPo could’ve reported it first if I was the one who “uncovered” it, but I guess it’s an improvement.

The @washingtonpost.com is now a pretend newspaper which clearly is in breach of copyright. @oliverdarcy.bsky.social Setting up a fund to enable us to sue these lawless organizations and fed govt. in the age of Trump will likely earn you more than Substack royalties lol @gtconway.bsky.social
time travelers
You will never be given respect by them, you have to fight for it. Keep fighting.
"First reported" is just code for - by someone we actually respect CBS and wapo are all friends and go to the same dinner parties; they're real people and you are the great unwashed masses, barely capable of journalism and not worthy of their notice. It fucking sucks
You must feel special to know you wrote the prequel for the WaPo article.
Not surprising when this is all in the same news cycle as Junior Gorg's op-ed. The corporate news outlets are not just reluctant collaborators but willful participants in this regime.
I’ve been waiting for this video to be an appropriate reply to something.
(From the show Mr Show in case anyone doesn’t know)
Amazing contribution! Thank you!
Nice work. Subscribed today. One of few subscriptions I have, but I've seen you break news first enough times to want to support you. Your insistence on being recognized for your work (which Dems could learn from) clinches my support.
Gotta love when they pat you on the head, call you a sharp gal and steal the credit
Did they bother to link out? Why don’t orgs LINK to things? It’s better for everyone
All's well that ends well? Let's hope they learnt the lesson on how to behave "in society" for the future
🤬🤬
Columbus discovered America even if there was indigenous population on the continent for thousands of years.
Sorry... forgot to tell you. You're an uncoverer now. Only billionaire owned media outlets are permitted to report.
"Now that the story has been reported by an independent reporter, can a large media company repeat it so we can acknowledge that it exists?"
They’re salty that you’re running circles around them.
Hahahahahahahahaha “ooo she sounds smart and hot wonder if she has a name!!!” That's why we love you, Marisa
Big day for Rumplestilskiens everywhere
Duh, because what you do isn't Reporting (tm) which can only be handed down by the anointed publications. Gatekeeping bs. (And thank you for your reporting.)
Attribution should be obligatory.
@cbsnews.com We go to story’s source, not you! I hope Trump fucks your sale!!! You are deserving.
Fascinating that even now, @cbsnews.com still doesn't understand the meaning of the word "first." 🧐
JFC there is nothing more this country disdains that a woman being excellent. I’m sorry.
This is also just a bad sentence verging on run-on territory. Telling the straight truth would have made it read better
At least they acknowledged your existence.
Tortured.
After the 60 Minutes stunt I didn't think I could lose more respect for CBS journalism, and yet here we are. I started following Kabas because of this insult, so I guess I get the benefit of a new voice at least.
Better. But still not great.
It’s almost like they’ve forgotten that they need their own primary sources, and that reporting on reporting on someone else’s work isn’t journalism. Keep up the great work, Marisa! Your fellow ink-stained wretches see you!
I think their sources are no longer going to them. And why would they?
So disrespectful!
Lead Investigative Uncoverer
CBS this fall: The Uncoverer
CSI:Uncredited
Ok but a tv series about an independent investigative journalist covering ascendant fascism and out scooping all the legacy outlets could be so good.
It could be an actually updated reboot of Early Edition! I adored this show. You guys remember it? Also, LOL, it was a CBS show. After all, Marisa’s work is a week ahead of legacy outlets. It’s perfect! 🧑🍳😘
Can Marisa get some awesome theme music too? Maybe a cat?
Such a fine line between reported and reposted
like bullies, they cave when called out. Keep going
this sucks
It’s not reported until an oligarch owned media reports it
To them you don't count because you aren't a giant corporation.
Hmm... given that you have about 35 times more followers than they do on Bluesky, maybe they're doing it for the visibility?
You uncovered it in an adorable lil blog post, but it was first truly Reported by the very serious and reputable Washington Post. Journalism doesn't count until it has the opportunity to be laundered through the lens of an institutional media brand's rightwing benefactors.
Well, it kind of implies you were first if WaPo cited your work in their story; they couldn't cite you if you didn't precede their story. In either event (chicken v egg), good on you & keep up the excellent work! Thank you!
So they reported it first but you cited it because you uncovered it but not before they reported it? Fuckin' assholes.
Real journalist one ups corporate journalists is a great twist in our bleak media landscape.
Prolly cause to them it isn’t “reported” unless it comes from one of the trad media big boys
Which is ironic because don’t they lean on your reporting, citing it, yet say that they haven’t verified the sources? Lol seems a good way of reporting wrong info. Like *I* trust your reporting because I’ve seen you bring receipts… seems like very poor verification and standards on their part.
WP was first, MK was firstest 🥴
Maybe it was a typo, and "reported" was meant to be "reposted"
It’s like legacy media doesn’t consider independent journalists to be reporters
At least those integrity-bankrupt turds moved a little bit into the right..
You are the shipboard computer in Galaxy Quest and WaPo is the Sigourney Weaver. Except news. And real.
“The continent was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who raped and murdered the indigenous population . . .”
Oooh theyre salty
Reminds me of the time I got first place in a track meet when I crossed the finish line behind another runner!
!! That was the part I was extra stumbling over when I saw your screenshot last night, like I'm sorry, WaPo first reported by citing the work of somebody else (not gonna say who)?? Because that sounds like definitionally not first!
i pride myself on understanding the basic flow of information and i don’t believe that’s how it works!!
WaPo first reported it like Elvis invented Rock and Roll.
Yeah, pretty common in science. “As reported by Big Science Guy in really important journal, who built on the discovery of Dr. Not So Big, published in good quality journal of record.” And Big Journalism probably only tips their hat to other Big Journalism.
Because they don't care if someone else breaks the story first, they don't consider it true until a legacy media reporter corroborates it.
Still didn't mention how hot you are 🤪
As well they should feature your name. I've followed your work for a bit now and it's always thorough and serious.
When they're definitely not scared of you
Well done.
because they don't recognize freelance work of course, despite benefiting from it greatly
A woman? Doing investigative journalism? Must be some sort of freak — better leave her out. (Glad you got recognised in the end, though you shouldn’t have to shame them into it.)
cbs clearly learning nothing from the killian memos
At least you came off sounding hot and smart... could've been worse.
Being "independent" and female basically renders you invisible.
I am disappointed. They didn't add how smart and hot the reporter sounded, per your earlier statement!
Exclusive! Yes that's right, we ran this story on this page only and no others!
The next $80 I get is going to you. This is ridiculous.
Schroedinger's journalist
Narrator voice: it still isn’t accurate
Who was the WAPO reporter inspired by your actual news? I'd like to craft an email....
It kind of feels like they consider you more of a competitor than the Washington Post, if they were trying to keep your name out of it.
Well done marisa
“[…] first reported by independent journalist Marisa Kabas who uncovered […] and was cited by the Washington Post […]” is how it should read. Ridiculous.
This
You are a very good journalist.
Starting to feel like it's churlish to worry about AI stealing our work when regular people at media orgs have absolutely no qualms in doing so.
Ah, the "never give credit to the independent journalist who broke the story" bias . . . the creepy cousin of “it won’t be quotable until a guy says it, even if you’re the expert.” Keep fighting the good fight! 💪🏻
Say her name!
It's just a big legacy media circle jerk
@cbsnews.com still needs to fix it - credit where credit is due
Just me or others feeling it’s not ‘only’ institutional media bs but what’s it called again? Sexism.
Do they just not teach the importance of citation anymore? Because this level of ineptitude regarding sources would result in a failed assignment in, like, every writing class I’ve ever taken.
YES! A small victory is still a VICTORY and this is good news.
Such BS, Marisa! You’re killing it.
this is how it works now, some scrappy independent person has to do the dirty and unseemly job of uncovering so that a legacy media journalist in a big fancy office somewhere can report on it
It just shows them that their sources no longer trust them and are going to independent journalists instead. That’s the billionaire owner legacy.
It’s the bias against independent journalists and favoritism towards the corporate outlets. The former aren’t yet recognized as “real news” even as they are higher quality and less beholden to elite overlords. Keep up the good work, Marisa!
Yay for the partial victory!
I guess you need to be owned by a billionaire before you can be properly credited for breaking a story
I think in the future it's fair play and tournabout to, if CBS news ever breaks a story, credit the story to an indie journalist who referenced it instead, but mention that said indie happened to cite "millionaire owned corporate media" when breaking the news.
Can almost hear them spitting your name out there lol
I see 🙃. WaPo _said_ it had been reported by someone else, so they were not the first to report it. Makes you wonder what part of “first reported” CBS News has trouble with
So you “uncovered” it but it was somehow WaPo that “reported” it? Those verbs are doing a lot of heavy lifting.
The corporate owned news era absolutely positively sucks donkey balls.
Why do we always have to copy the worst of the English? And vice versa?
So now we've established another gulag/rendition location in Rwanda!?!?
WTF does a woman have to do just to have her work be acknowledged?!? Oh! I know! Have a penis!
Many trans women have tested that hypothesis, and, uh, nope.
I am not gonna tell you how to career. But I keep thinking you and @coolzonemedia.bsky.social could do something cool together
@cbsnews.com LMAO losers
These condescending fucks
Writers are great. PS I think siting sources is a smart look.
you can feel the pain in every keystroke
I can feel the keyboard physically fighting not to transcribe the word "independent"
They are just smol bean multinational organizations, and it's their birthday. Why are you so mean?
Shaming sort of works sometimes.
This is exactly right. It's absurd on it's face. They did not "report it first" if you did. It's absurd ego gymnastics.
Said the same before I saw this post. Amazing condescension and outright falsehood.
Looks like CBS has an actual news room. “This paragraph. Who first reported on the Iraqi national? Let’s get a name so people can follow the chain of custody.” 👍
That's infuriating
If WaPo cited your work, then by definition your work was first. Wtf
Marisa, fuck WAPO, you get all my flowers 🌺 keep up the GOOD WORK!
The first "important" one.
I read it and thought, "oh, she used to work on the WaPo, left, and became an independent journalist, and then she sold the story as a free-lancer to the WaPo"
"Also cited." What a chickenshit formulation. Go, Marisa! Full speed ahead! Your grateful readers love your work.
Get it Marisa!!
I guess old media is desperately fighting for a meaningful place in the current ecosystem. Dismissing reporting in anything other than their publications could be seen as desperate clinging to legitimacy
Why didn't they just say "The Rwanda arrangements were first picked up by the Washington Post, which also cited work by independent journalist Marisa Kabas, who first reported the recent deportation from the U.S. of an Iraqi national to Rwanda.
I guess they are too fragile to admit their multi-million dollar news apparatuses ain't all that
WaPo were first… you know, like Buzz Aldrin.
Sorry thems the AP citation rules when the source is female 🤷
Guess it only counts as “reported” when it shows up in a Big Boy outlet. Sort of like how Europeans could “discover” places where non-Europeans had been living for millennia.
Congrats for making at least an initial crack in that wall...
It’s only reporting if it comes from the news region of corporate media, otherwise it’s just sparkling work cited
Does it really count as "reporting" if you aren't owned by a billionaire? 🤔
Does Journalism Need Rational Coherence? This Broadcaster Has A Different Idea
Yep. "Credit for the scoop goes to real journalists at WaPo, who cited earlier reporting by whatshername."
I use my public library account to read the Washington Post because I cancelled my subscription after 30+ years. Now I'm thinking I should tell them to cancel THEIR subscription.
Glad you could uncover it so that the ‘real’ journalists could report it.
This has been haunting me for 24 hours. I am glad they fixed!
Only giving credit after they get called out for being "biters"
How can we best support you (besides subscribing- I already did that)!
That’s…lazy as fuck
Gave this a like, but I'm wondering if naming her wouldn't amount to doxxing her in this case
You threaten their market share. Keep up the good (Great!) work.
In a propaganda-driven world, the misinformation machine must assign an approved outlet of propaganda to water down the accuracy and downplay the importance of independent journalism Keep up the good work, we know the truth and that’s all that matters
First Post!
They obviously saw the issue and changed it to include the original reporter. But still continue to say Wapo was first when clearly they know it wasn’t. So, the inaccuracy of their reporting remains after an edit.
"Quietly updated" Sorry, I'm not OK with silent substantive changes to news stories. (not fixing typos) There should be a note. On the page it's: Updated on: May 3, 2025 / 7:59 AM EDT It corresponds with page source ⬇️ as the only time a change is noted. We don't know what changed. Insufficient.
They're getting closer!
