One of the more infuriating things about NH is that people will turn out for statewide federal elections, but they generally ignore local. Which is why NH has such batshit insane people in the state legislature (I grew up in NH & my parents still live there).

NH is a donor state at the federal level, i.e. they send more to the govt than they receive in transfer payments. You can look it up.

NH's main industry is tourism and it doesn't have its own major airport. "the cultural and systemic benefits of nearby city density" wasn't as pithy.

What makes you think Staten Island leeches off money? It's nickname is the "forgotten borough" since it does not receive its fair share. Can't really argue the inherent racism here, though. Plenty of flack to throw our way, no need to call us cheap, too.

Elle is right. I live 15 minutes from the NH border AND was born, raised, and educated in the White Supremacy State of the North. I fled the place, it (mostly) sucks. Trust me when I say I had to cobble together a good education out of the place, despite itself.

Note: one of those Dem Senators is retiring Sen mother-effing Jeanne Shaheen. Under her tenure as gov, UNH was forced to GIVE BACK funding during the fiscal year in 1998, the school had to make devastating cuts, I watched it happen, my fave teachers in libarts were laid off, hiring freezes, etc.
