Haven't looked lately but it used to be that Indiana (my home state) had a lot of nodes on the white supremacist groups map. I used to see a group run maneuver with their little, often tiny, kids in my home town. It's always been terrifying.

In the 1920s, Indiana was run by the Ku Klux Klan. *A Fever In The Heartland* is an excellent history of this. When I was in high school in Indiana during the 1970s, a kid did a civics report on the KKK, and it wasn't negative.

There were pockets where the Klan never really got established, mostly because there were too many Catholics. My hometown—and where I went to university—resisted strongly, but it was still a sundown town.

Mine doesn't show up on lists of sundown towns, but I've always wondered.

I really only know because we had a large friary in town and there were a few black friars. People from local parishes had to escort their parents off the train if they came to visit. Otherwise, they wouldn't be let off.

(We also have monuments to a well-known copperhead at the county courthouse.)
