As an IT risk/security/compliance person, this is scary to hear but i'm grateful someone is finally saying something about the data risk here. I feel like I've been taking crazy pills the last few months.

Damages won't fix leaked info There are two solutions, neither palatable: 1. Dump the current info. Every ssn gets replaced. Every record gets expunged. Everyone gets a fresh start. 2. Dump the current system. Build a completely new system that doesn't rely on current info.

If we ever return to a law-abiding federal government, the DoJ will bring charges against DOGE and Musk and anyone who was found to have illegally accessed or moved the SSNs. The statutory penalty is $1k per #, which is over $400 BILLION total. We do not need to sue individually.

If you have not already done it, download your employment wage history from the SSA website. You don't want to have to prove what SS taxes you paid 30 years ago if the computer system crashes.
May I suggest that you also download the XML version of your SS report? That way they won't be able to claim that they can't in-process your data. Just a thought.
