Those places are great to visit, but to me that is a show. Packed with tourists. I visited two small shrines. No tourists. I would love to learn what local people do at these shrines. To me that is real life.

Very agree. I think you can know the real life of people by visiting the places without tourists. Japan is one of countries with over-tourism. I love to visit quiet places without tourists because I want to feel Zen-like stillness at temples & shrines.
