One thing the "One Laptop Per Child" movement found is that the light from the screen was particularly valued so people could continue working in the evening!

They may not have power at all, because diesel engines are expensive, fuel is expensive, and may be hard to get. However, someone in the middle of nowhere can get one solar panel for their roof, and add a small battery for evening power.
