As a travelling Canadian, I have met many Americans and like them they're friendly, resourceful, and generous people. And you are quite correct that they see every resource, every desire, every convenience, everything, in terms of money making.
I want to clarify that only a very few Americans seem to think about money-making opportunities in a sociopathic way, or perhaps an amoral way, i.e. without regard for impact to others. Nearly all are very concerned that their actions benefit all parties, without detriment to others not involved.
