Don't disagree with your points, but it is ALSO about the very obligations people have to a society that they enjoy the robust benefits of. America has long been a place of maximal benefit with minimal obligation but even THAT seems too much for the anti-vax and tech-bro crowds.

I assert that “parental rights” is a total misnomer. Children have rights and parents are obligated to provide the children that to which they are entitled. Everything we think of as “rights” is just powers parents are granted in service to those duties.
I agree it’s a misnomer but trying to change it is (and has been) a problem. Evangelicals and fundamentalists are weirdos who think they should control their children like puppets.
