I never really considered Jaws a horror movie, purely because the final confrontation took place in the daytime, and the film's primary antagonist wasn't a malicious entity, just a wild animal following its own predatory instinct to feed.

I don't think its all that consequential whether the shark was malicious or not; it's essentially "the movie monster" that our main characters have to defeat. The shark feels almost like a "slasher" which is funny given Jaws 2 felt even more like a slasher with all the teenage victims.

"the final confrontation took place in the daytime" Bit of a slippery slope there in terms of being a standard for what is considered horror. At the same time, you got me thinking HARD about what horror films DO have their climax take place in the daytime. 😅
