It was the largest displacement of black people since the Civil War. And 20 years later, it shows. Like losing a limb. The scars are indelible. 🙏😞✊

Also- and let me paraphrase what Malik Rahim said during the forum on Tuesday- none of this had to happen. There was room in Metairie. There was room in the West Bank. But the Gretna cops came onto OUR fucking bridge and forced people back into the disaster. And then we were scattered.
Because racism.
I didn’t realize until the last two days just HOW FUCKING ANGRY I still am. I had tucked it into a box. All compartmentalized. But I am not ok. I am still so deeply angry about the way our people were treated. I should try to channel that into something positive. It’s a lot to carry.
I can’t begin to imagine. I know how I feel seeing my friends and neighbors so hurt and raw every year and how I hurt for them. For our whole city.
You may not have been here then, J. But you’re a local now.
Thank you for that blessing 😌
