I've seen more attractive maternity dresses! No style, no shape, no effort. I could make 3 dresses out of one of those, and I'm no dressmaker.

There are so many places where I love the designs but they pretty much only fit you if you're model height
Yeah - I am tired of shops where the dresses are longer than I am tall
I’m 5’3”. I can be fairly certain that anything I buy that isn’t specifically “petite” will need to be professionally shortened. An extra £12 on top of the price.
I often buy vintage dresses - Etsy is a happy hunting ground. They're made for shorter women, and they can be surprisingly cheap. I bought a great cotton dress for about £50 a couple of months ago that I've worn loads.
I hadn’t thought to look there. 💡
Popsy ones look quite good - and have pockets (www.popsyclothing.co.uk)
I’m not really a dress person, but would definitely wear these
will have a look, thanks!
They look as though a very small child has raided her mother’s wardrobe. These do nobody any favours. And they aren’t cheap!
I am tall (5'8") but as a not-svelte woman I have spent my whole life trying to AVOID wearing giant tents, and instead getting things that fit properly and the 2020s aren't helping.
yes, it's counter-intuitive but even if you're a bit bigger, something well-cut that's fitted will look much better than a marquee!
Hideous anyway!
I’ve had luck with Nobody’s Child and Free People this year, usually their sale selection. Their stuff fits a size 18/20 and flatters my not-so-waist.
Yes, Nobody's Child are also great!!
oh, that sounds great! Will have a look at those, thanks
I’m glad it was ok to suggest. My favourites have been a co-ordinate set from them (I forget which) and a dress which I don’t have to wear a bra in. Bliss.
I would appreciate Uniqlo’s service for tailoring the length of their own trousers more if the waist sizes were accessible. Gah.
Have a look at White Stuff sale. Everyday sort of dresses with some shape and pockets and not expensive.
I can’t stop laughing. They’re not good are they.
really not!
They are almost Guardian fashion section worthy.
Oh steady on, now...
😆😆
I am a normal sized guy - but in clothes world I am “extra small”.
I quite like the way they look when I see one in the wild!
I am 5’11 and all of those would look shit on me. I don’t get it either! Why are we obsessed with dressing like Little House on the Prairie? Seems quite infantilising?

GREAT MINDS
They upset me. Especially when paired with thick headbands and pearl necklaces, holy Christ on a bike I want to weep
I’m with you. I live in a tiny little town where they are the prevailing aesthetic and sometimes I feel their lure and I hate it.
Be strong 😫
yes! That is bang on
I have the same problem, I'm 4ft8 why doesn't anyone do clothes and shoes as I am a small size 3,for people like me.I hate buying clothes and shoes that don't fit me properly. Give lovely Daphne a hug from me
Nevermind the length, shape and prints - they are all over £150 😱
I'm 6ft tall and I wouldn't wear any of them cos they're all gopping 😆
Toast is weird because their dresses swamp the models but actually look ok on regular people
THIS. I have definitely had to learn to "read" the website photos to figure out "will that actually look nice on *me*". Their tailored stuff is less odd.
But this in Uniqlo is dirt cheap, has pockets and seems to work for everyone. I have two. www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/produc...
oh, I like that they show it on someone short! I think I'd be swamped by that, though - that length would drive me mad
I have some knee length dresses from TOAST & I really like their relaxed trousers. But I agree recently all their stuff has become wider and longer.
oh, I'm glad their stuff has worked for you!
Some of their stuff yes. Although a shift dress I recently ordered was too long, so I sent it back. Knee Length is my preferred length of dress. But tapered & relaxed (pref with elasticated waist!) is my preferred size of trousers!
I must reup Lauren Bravo’s piece on what it takes to be a Cos Woman on similar grounds graziadaily.co.uk/fashion/news...
ha ha this is PERFECT
I used to rather like Toast (I’m 5ft 6”) but the last years they seem to have forgotten women with boobs/short waists/petite women exist.
None has ever understood short waisted women. I think this is why i invariably wear crop trousers and tops or conceivably sundresses which dont seem exclusively designed for willowy english weeds.
Incidentally there=are some nice fitted linen Kew garden dresses in Next of all places which fitted me, 5 feet 1, perfectly! I was therefore contractually obliged to buy one…
Ooh, I'll have a look. That said, I've bought a couple of great vintage dresses this summer that I've been wearing to death.
I genuinely think cheap clothes are designed for shorter women & often larger women. Hilariously classist. Ive never been able to wear Ghost or even Monsoon. Most my nicer things are spotted among the slop from Primark, Zara or wherever. Just bought a dress everyone likes at good ol C&As!
Id also argue its Aryan- racist. English upper class w are typically kong waisted, flatchested, big hips - pear shape. UC dresses mimic this. Im Ahkenazi middle European short oblong with slight short waisted dent.
and cheap clothes for tiny teenagers who don't have money to spend on quality
This but for shortarses. I wear cropped tops and low waisted trousers because waistbands cut into my belly button.
Crop trousers are ankle length on me!
Thats why i buy them!
they've JUST started putting darts back in the tops, thank god. There were definitely a few years recently where I could buy skirts, but nothing for the top half.
Yes, they’ve really been very boxy for a while. I bought a skirt last year (pockets!) although tbh am getting very tired of midi length.
yes - they seem to think women are uniformly tall and happy to wear sacks
I look better in something fitted (and well-made fitted is also comfortable -it’s not an either/or) so at those prices I’d expect a bit more skillful dressmaking.
Yes!
I would look dreadful in these - only for tall & skinny.
And even slim women would look like a heifer in something that baggy
No 3 is conventration camp chic 😃
I have the top right one, it's very nice on! (though I am 5'7", it would definitely swamp anyone much shorter)
The bottom left one is definitely a bit penitential, mind.
ha, I'd look as if I'd accidentally gone shopping in the tents department if I tried on any of those!
I genuinely like that one and don’t get why everyone is shitting on it
Not going to shit on anyone’s style but to my eyes that is a very weird photo, something about the way the model’s holding her arms to maximise the tent like appearance of the whole thing
The photo is definitely a bit oddly posed but the dress itself is genuinely very nice! Also Toast are as nothing to Cos in the "all garments weirdly styled on furious models" stakes...
Furious models 😂
I have one Cos jumper - sparkly silver - that I bought for Christmas last year. It's just about ok with jeans but even that is a weird fit. It's huge - even the xs - and balloon-shaped. Nothing else from Cos has ever worked on me www.endource.com/product/cos-...
I have quite a lot of their stuff but it's a definite crapshoot with some garments as to whether it'll be "stylish, flattering" or "looks like I'm about to say Mass".
I occasionally go into Cos and think "oh, I don't mind that; it might work on me" and then ... it doesn't
A lot of them definitely need height.
this is me wearing that jumper at Christmas. It's the xs and you can see how odd the shape is and how big it is!
I think you make it work. Love the sparkles.
That is cute but *extremely* oversized!!
oh, you look great in that!
Thankyou!
I don't get Toast. I know a lot of people swear by it but it gives me 1970s geography teacher with more money than sense.
And what have I ever done to that woman so she glares at me?
well, quite!
ha ha, yes, that's bang on. Their colours are often so sludgy, too
I know they have good production values and are B Corp but I just don't like the clothes.
Drives me insane. Average female UK height is either 5’3 or 5’5 depending on source. I am 5’5. These dresses swamp me, I can’t find an ankle-length dress anywhere.
And yet at 5'10" I've had to return 3 pairs of trousers to Toast which are too short. Who are they for?
Maybe Toast is a front for money laundering like those Oxford St sweet shops and Turkish barbers 🤔
🤨
I am tired of seeing racks of dresses that are longer than I am tall!
I'm a big fan of Lily & Me - cheaper, more flattering and equals or exceeds Toast's much vaunted quality of make. I've never understood how Toast can charge so much for clothes that look like workhouse uniforms
ooh, will have a look, thanks!
I discovered eShakti and never went back. Custom sizing makes for a perfect fit.
thank you!!
Yeah, I’m the same height as you and wouldn’t touch any of these with a barge pole.
Feeling seen…
Not a question of being tall enough. They are all hideous!
yeah, they're posh sacks!
😆😆😆
glorified smocks. smock couture
And whilst I don’t believe in skintight dresses - surely they don’t have to be absolute sacks?!
pretty sure those were designed by someone who hates women's bodies
I’m still trying to work out if that’s a size 4 model in a size 14 dress or if it really was designed like that. A new ‘androgynous’ line perhaps? (Scratching around here - they just look odd to me)
Be grateful.
ha, you have a point
I bloody love a Toast dress, but then I do wear my skirts very long. Plus, they are insanely well made and last decades.
(I am 5'3" and a bit)
I like Toast dresses and am not tall (5’3”) - you can eat what you like and THEY HAVE POCKETS
POCKETS!
Palava is cute (albeit not cheap)
oh, I'll have a look, thanks!
I always assumed toast purposely made them long so you would trim it at home at your desired length, at least that's what I have always done (and I get a nice scarf out of it too)
Ahhh Kate, my fellow tiny queen!
Top left looks like sleeveless version of merchantandmills.com/uk/the-hatti... dress in merchantandmills.com/uk/winter-hymn
oh yes, it does - good spot!
Not just dresses, I’m 5’6” and all the trousers are far too long even with heels.
oh, trousers are impossible for me. I'm 5'2".
Over the last few years I’ve had to start buying ‘short’ jeans and trousers and ‘petite’ dresses, am I shrinking or has the normal height for a woman suddenly increased?
clothes have got longer, definitely
Do they come with guy ropes and tent pegs?
The last one really is 'When you want to be camouflaged near your Great-Aunt's herbaceous border'.
ha ha, yes
I’m not sure we’re missing out
no, I'm not exactly desperate to wear any of those, tbf.
Smock addiction, a sad blight on the Waitrose demographic.

omg COS, the changing room in which I always gaze at the 1950s Scandinavian midwife in the mirror with a sigh.
I love the idea of COS, but it just doesn't work on me.
I now treat it more like an art gallery than a shop. Beautiful forms to look at, then a sharp about turn before getting any ideas.
This. Rather than wondering if that Matisse would fit me.
Hahahah yes.
yes, same
I have a fairly fitted A line Cos dress from 2-3 years ago in heavy cotton stretch T shirt material. Heavy enough to be quite stiff and keep its shape. Plain blue. Am 5ft 1 and it’s my favourite garment. But the only thing they ever made that fits me. Then they stopped. Why?
Heaven! HELL!
I am 5'9 so love these. My sister is 5'11 so she would love them too. Mum was 5'1 (the tallest woman in her family) so she would have been on your side.
even if you're tall, though, they're shaped like marquees!
Which is why I like them. I have never been a fan a fan of tightly fitting clothes. And they have pockets !!!!!
May I suggest Zuri? www.shopzuri.com
thank you!
Definitely recommend. Come in two lengths, have pockets Every time I wear one I get compliments
I’m tall but wouldn’t wear any of those. Not just unflattering, but one strong gust and I’d be off.
you probably could carry off one of those as you're also really slim, but yes, you'd risk it turning into some kind of parachute
I’d wake up in Kansas.
😆😆😆😆
they all look like they're wearing printed bin liners
marquee-sized bin liners at that
The Mormon Prairie Sack Dress is my actual nemesis
yeah, definitely not my vibe!
I'm 5 ft 6 but big boobs + I know dresses like that will just make me look like an up ended sofa, even though I find some of the prints attractive. Note how often the models are east Asian so not a lot of curves. It's the same with Poetry + Wrap full of angular East Africans that I cannot relate to.
