I mean, there's not going to be a breakthrough, is there, because Putin wants a chunk of Ukraine and Zelenskyy isn't going to hand over any territory, and nor should he. Trump is prolonging this conflict by supporting Putin's appalling demands, not shortening it.

And Trump is doing this for his own vanity; he doesn't care about Ukraine. Putin won't stick to any deals, either. He'll use eastern Ukraine as a springboard into the rest of Ukraine later. Trump is Putin's patsy.

Almost. Trump is doing it for money and power. He cares for nothing else. Every decision he makes is predicated first by what's most profitable for him.

Yes and no. Trump famously listens to the last person who spoke to him. If they go in and fully insert their noses where the sun shines not, they might actually get something out of him.

I wonder if the European leaders will seek to point out that whatever Putin can offer by way of business is dwarfed by what Europe offers? Or, perhaps, that Putin’s success is Xi’s success?

Absolutely right. Putin's goal is to reintegrate UA into RU because he has stated that Ukrainians are really Russian. Without achieving that goal, actual Russians in RU will see UA and question why it has a more democratic process, better economy and greater personal freedom… that threatens Putin.

That last line is in some ways the most telling. A U.S. president is acting as a facilitator for Vladimir Putin. He’a literally saying “he’s expecting my call after this meeting”. It’s absolutely extraordinary. And all because he wants a sodding peace prize.
