Before she became Tory leader, I thought Badenoch would be interesting in the job as although she's a bit mad, I thought she was smart and I rather liked her no-fucks-given approach. But she's just mad, and this is really shitwitted. Don't lie about something easily checked - that's basic stuff.

Is there anyone genuinely ‘smart’ left in the Conservative party? The best shot they’d have now is to install Farage. I’m not entirely certain that won’t happen.

Labour, on the other hand, do have smart people in the managerial sense, but apparently no-one with any political nous.

The sensible choice all along would have been James Cleverley - gives the right vibes, has a hinterland, absolutely not hypnotised by Farage's bullshit. So obviously his team fucked up getting him onto the final ballot.

Well - it’d be less batshit. But I can’t see him cutting through to be honest.

I can't see him doing any worse than Kemi. He's good at the whole "avuncular, I'm normal" thing. The fact that he described the Rwanda scheme as "batshit" also speaks well of him. Maybe the Tories are past saving, I dunno, but they'd have had a better chance under him.

But having briefly met him, he seems like a perfect backbencher - good at telling people what they want to hear, with a modicum of self-effacement, and the sense he’d to his best to sort stuff out but without too much expectation that he could make any fundamental change.

yes - in many ways I'm fine with the Tories being led by a mad incompetent, but also, a broadly sane and competent leader there would help keep a check on Reform

If there's a lesson here, perhaps it's that being sufficiently appealing to earn the votes of that particular electorate should automatically rule you out of the actual job.

That's the point I think. Her back story is interesting enough! It's also fine to have not been an academic superstar as a child and grafted to achieve your goals as an adult. But her self-image seems to be so reliant on her being a genius who has been unfairly overlooked she can't cope with that.

I've been listening to Today and PM much less than I used to, and so this is the first time I've even heard her name in weeks. I'd genuinely forgotten she's LOTO. It was delightful, and it's also hilarious to me that if she read this it'd probably rankle her - despite me being an absolute nobody.

I remember her once upbraiding a PSC when she was in government on the nature of the conversation saying 'We have to do better than this!" That kind of smug moral righteousness is invariably a kind of tell. it's only ever a matter of time.

Yeah, well, those of us who have her as an MP have long been aware of who she is. We've been very surprised there seemed to be no feedback from her constituency party to higher levels of the conservative party before she became a minister.
