My issues with early 21stC digital rights activists (who I often liked a lot) was that they thought the meatspace governance frameworks were designed solely to further the interests of the rich and powerful. They were not wrong, but missed that these frameworks *also* stopped us killing each other.

A huge amount of our long term social conventions are all about placing enlightened and collective self-interest above short term endorphin rushes. My fave example is the hustings: when did we start thinking patiently listening to our opponent was a good thing?

Platforms that inadvertently (or deliberately) heighten the reward for bad behaviour and provide no countervailing force are basically doomed...because we, humans, are the problem.
