Made time for visual astronomy tonight (between clouds) using a Celestron 9.25-in SCT. Had some truly breath-taking views of the Moon and Saturn. And the carbon star V Aquilae also presented a fine view. However, planetary nebulae M57 & M27 were barely visible, but very easy targets to image. 🔭

A photograph of a Celestron 9.25-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope (SCT) in a garden setting. The telescope is equipped for visual astronomy with a manual focuser, a 2-inch diagonal and a 2-inch eyepiece. The telescope is attached to a Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ6 equatorial mount. A mini-computer (ZWO ASIAIR Pro) is connected to the mount and a small guide scope on top of the telescope tube, and is used to very accurately point the telescope to celestial objects.

I've almost forgotten what visual astronomy is like. I really need to take the camera off and remind myself!

I know what you mean. And it actually feels good to do some visual astronomy every so often. Nothing beats the pristine beauty of the brighter celestial wonders. However, that pleasure quickly turns to disappointment as faint objects remain elusive and their beauty is only revealed via imaging.

I love visual observation but so much is invisible to the eye here. I never appreciated just how much is electronically visible till I joined the 'smart' club.

I haven't done much visual observing for ages. I'm now nostalgic for my old 6" Newtonian 🙂 (Nice scope by the way; how is it for imaging?)

I have on occasion used the C925 for planetary imaging which depends critically upon excellent atmospheric conditions. For deep sky imaging the C925's long focal length presents several challenges and is best used with an off-axis guider to keep stars round. Will try one day with an OAG.

Visual astronomy is still the best. It works on social media if you show your equipment!
