What happened if there were problems with the in-house system while you were on annual leave? Did everyone have to sit and wait for Mr Wonderful to come back? Why wouldn't you train up others? The answer is obvious. No wonder they eventually had no choice but you get rid of you. What an arsehole.

🤣 you've never worked in an IT department have you? Imagine thinking someone would be given the time and resources to train other people up.

Add to that, often the cross-section of people who have both the willingness and perseverance to understand the complexity of and help manage these usually archaic line of business systems is usually very small.

"This system is run by this single line of Perl. We're now going to run a two week course to help you understand that line"

I left/got pushed from one place, left about ~150 pages of documentation, printed. They tossed it and binned my data shortly after I left. When shit broke, I was contacted. Told them to read the doco. Was informed it was destroyed. I was offered stupid money to re-create. I declined.

It's equally likely that no-one understood / cared what they were doing or why it was important. Work cultures where information is not shared are often a consequence of management priorities being elsewhere.
