It is frankly bizarre seeing a lot of evangelicals on my Facebook act like he was some sort of serious Christian apologist. These are conservatives I would expect to like him, but that just seems to be completely completely mischaracterizing his work.
They see someone mention Jesus once and suddenly they’re the next apostle Paul (unless you’re Joe Biden, then your religion is clearly faked and inauthentic of course). It’s been all over my feed and it’s so depressing.
Considering I saw one of my sister’s friends comment on FB that this was like, “MLK” to her, I’m not surprised at the elevation of Kirk by rightniks.
So I noticed this too. And the clip I keep seeing is just him arguing the Bible is true. An awful lot of evangelical energy goes into “God is real.”
You see this a lot in evangelical media. God is real. I’ve mentioned this before but compare Dead Man Walking (one of the most deeply moving movies about faith ever made) with you average evangelical movie. 1/
Dead Man Walking centers on themes central to Christianity: (1) that forgiveness is hard, but good for you and (2) that seeking forgiveness in an honest way sets you free. I don’t even know Robbins’. 2/
But it’s a deeply religious film.
Like many “martyrs” or “tragic youths” that died too soon, people want to graft an idealized version of the parts of themselves the identify with the person in question on him. They want to see Kirk as a “martyr” b/c they don’t want to admit that his life was wasted causing harm.
