Absolutely! My WW2 Marine grandfather took a demotion for standing up to a superior officer to do what was right and protect his men. I was never more proud of him than when I learned that. THAT is what Marines are about, they’re NOT about being used as tools of a wannabe dictator.
So.... Having said that: How many refused an "illegal order" from the private to the general? You are correct in idolizing your father (and I agree that u should), but WW2 was a different time when US citizens were proud of their country... Now, not so much!
