You just know that at some point someone (maybe his wife; she’s smart) briefed him on the actual facts of the case but he made a deliberate choice to ignore reality and stick with the bit.

Conan's 12:30 show was apolitical and genuinely funny for as long as it was on. You can do that, but you have to have Conan's particular absurd genius for silly and smart, and nobody but Conan does these days.
