Whatever EU deal is announced on Monday the benefits to UK will inevitably be inferior to membership of the EU. The UK side will try to limit the many damages of Brexit but frictions and costs will remain and we will probably have to pay for the benefits we obtain. Brexit will always be a negative.

well said. brexity red lines - no to rejoin, no to CU, no to SM - are all based on fantasy Graham, as you know. todays sham summit will just permeate the "Make brexit work" fantasy.

Until Farage and his generation of anti- EU grifters are no longer profiting from their lies, we have to live with the #brexit mess, I'm afraid. Up to the next generation to fix it.

That's a shame as if this govt did it, we'd all feel the benefit.

They can’t. It’s going to take much longer and far more work to persuade the EU to let us back in. And we don’t know if the current lot will get another 5 years

I disagree. The EU has said the door is open for the UK to rejoin. It's the Daily Mail pretending it isn't.

Yep, agreed… however half and a tiny bit of the country had its democratic say and to reverse Brexit would require a new referendum

Or a government elected on a manifesto commitment to rejoin.

Like the SNP when Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 becomes Independent. 62% of Scots said they wanted to stay in 2016, but dragged out anyway. I believe that has figure has increased, dramatically.

I take heart that it's a step in the right direction. At long last. Sure it sounds like small beer but the language and the presentation are an improvement on the last 5 years. We're finally allowing the doctor to look at our gaping, gangrenous wound. Maybe at some point we'll accept healing.

Hear hear well pointed out… this is just a small step in the right direction towards full membership once again.

Isn’t this just the absolute truth. Britain will never enjoy what it gave away, when we apply to join it will be on the same terms as any other applicant. This is what many people still don’t understand. A new membership will be worse than this and worse than we had as a member before.

Still far, far better than any alternative.

The UK had opted out of some EU laws and agreements, including economic and monetary union (the euro), the border-free Schengen zone, the charter of fundamental rights, and some security and justice issues. Most don’t see these as material, as long as Carling is 1€
