It's kind of insane that after near $1B in crowdfunding that they still haven't shipped a finalized version of the original game we were promised.

I guess I just don't quite understand where these crowdfunding figures actually came from? Like, Wing Commander was never THAT popular so how did they come into this? I loved Chris Roberts games years ago, and backed Star Citizen in the very beginning, but like I knew who he was.

The games industry was much smaller in the Wing Commander days, and the deliverables for those older games were much smaller in scope and quality. I say that having been a big fan of Wing Commander since I was a child.

Wing Commander was ridiculously complex for its day… which is part of the problem, he learned early that excess can be its own reward. I think it comes down to having a producer that can match him. When he didn’t have a superstar, schedules dragged after vision; Strike Commander, Freelancer.

We both must have severely underestimated the number of whales who will buy a $25K virtual ship in a game that hasn't shipped.
