Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said football has been “lost” to Saudi Arabia and criticised his former employer’s role in offering “no opposition” to the Middle East nation. www.nytimes.com/athletic/649...

Former president of World football's governing body FIFA, Sepp Blatter speaks to a journalist as he arrives at the building of the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland to a hearing summoned by Swiss prosecutor on September 1, 2020 in Bern. Blatter and former UEFA president each face interrogation from the Swiss public prosecutor this week as part of the of the proceedings opened in 2015 over a 2011 payment of 2 million Swiss francs.

It’s not the “white man” getting the short end, it’s every person living in those countries who are losing jobs, benefits, health, security and rights because of the greed of a few.

Their bid dossier was the only one that posed a high risk to players wellbeing due to the heat and infrastructure for a start. Even if you take away all of the factors outside of sport. It was objectively the “least suitable” bid and yet it won. It’s the corruption behind it that’s the issue

The USA 94 World Cup was also played under extreme heat. So Qatar is going around buying world cups and club teams. So what? Look at the EPL. As for human rights, yeah, I’m glad they got called out but I don’t think the 🇺🇸 or 🇬🇧 has any business talking human rights to anyone

Luke Hook @lukehook.com

They may well do for some, in fact I’m sure they are. But I can assure you that’s not the case for me. My gripe isn’t even really with Qatar, it’s with FIFA. An organisation leading a sport shouldn’t be in a position where it can be bought. But as you say, the western rich are the issue there too

Luke Hook @lukehook.com

I think you’ve got off track here. None of what you’re saying I’m disagreeing with. I’m not saying other nations are perfect. I’m saying the Qatar bit was deemed a danger to health. It scored ~60% for suitability check from FIFA itself, the lowest of the submitted bids. Yet it won. Once again…

Luke Hook @lukehook.com

This isn’t about whether a World Cup should happen in the Middle East. I firmly believe every country/continent/region should be able to host it under the right circumstances. My problem is that the Qatar bid didn’t win on merit for the “benefit to football”. It won because of corruption

jul 13, 2025, 8:26 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
Terry #ACAB👹🇵🇸🇮🇪🇰🇪🇭🇹🇲🇽🇨🇩🇿🇦 @mystakak.bsky.social

If you want a World Cup on “merit” then Western Europe or the US would host every World Cup. If you’re gonna host a world cup in the Middle East, Qatar makes the most sense. They’ve invested in the sport and can afford or build the facilities

jul 13, 2025, 5:09 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Luke Hook @lukehook.com

True, but at the time that wasn’t the case. Hence the suitability score. A lot of that investment came as a result of the hosting win. And even that came at an unfortunate greater cost given the working conditions. Being able to afford to host a tournament isn’t the same as being suitable to do so

I will say, Qatar did go back on a key promise for air conditioned stadiums. Having said that, I do think another big part of the pushback was Euro-centrism in how it interrupted the European club calendar. Of course all the other leagues in the Americas are used to that by now

jul 13, 2025, 5:26 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Luke Hook @lukehook.com

Yeah I agree with you there. That always bothered me tbh. The arrogance that the whole thing needs to fit around the European calendar. Particularly the UK (where I’m from btw) given they constantly cry about not having a winter break. This summer’s Club World Cup has been damming in that respect 🧵
