Eat that, all of you fearing the extreme right is “on the rise in Europe”: it is not. That was yesterday. Actually, in some places the extreme right is now really tanking (I can think of Finland, Denmark, Hungary, the Netherlands…).

So voters do realize that these parties will not get them out of any real trouble. Makes me wonder why they vote for them in the first place? Can’t complain about this trend though.

"unchecked mass immigration" is itself total bullshit and far-right propaganda and touting that makes one on the wrong side of, well, everything. Sing their songs, be treated as one. There's an empirical reality and you're not in it. Your problem, fix it.

Nope, you're obviously just a simple racist - not surprising from a Dane these days - and that's it. It's your problem you need to grow up from, not to demand others to give up reality to accommodate your deficiencies.

I’m somewhat concerned about the facts. One of them is that there is poor correlation between the far right vote share and immigration. In fact what correlation there is seems to show that the far right’s support is stronger in areas and _countries_ with the fewest immigrants.

That seems to be systemic. The same was true in brexit including the fact that those regions in the UK that received most assitance from the EU, where also most likely to vote in favour of brexit. A sense of value and meaning, means much more to people than Friedmanian economics would admit.

Please take a look at the facts. For starters, here’s two maps of Germany, the first showing Turkish immigration (which is a good enough proxy for the kind of immigration the far right loves to talk about). The second shows the support of the far right AfD party. What do you see?

Marsanges @marsanges.bsky.social

The AfD is mostly a systems rejection. They reject immigrants only as a tool, they fundamentally reject modernity and liberalism as such. The AfD is the countryside hooligan youth that beats up a hippie. They kill homeless bc those are weak, thats what one does with weak ppl. AfD is Russia.

apr 14, 2025, 5:36 pm • 4 1 • view

Marsanges @marsanges.bsky.social

Turkish immigration is not the main thing. What gets people riled up (in Germany at least) is immigration from Syria, Afghanistan, et al. Same as in NL - where Maghreb makes ppl angry, not Turkish. In essence it is the NEW not the old immigration. Point is correct though, AfD is not about imm.

Then look at the numbers at country level. Here’s a good summary. How would you explain that 1) the combined vote for far right PARTIES is not noticeably smaller in Denmark, or 2) the far right tends to do _better_ in Eastern European countries that have practically no immigration to speak of?

A map of Europe showing the % share of votes far right parties and lists have achieved in each country in 2024. The map is only poorly if at all correlated to immigration and the numbers of immigrants. The source for the numbers is the European Parliament, the map is created by Le Monde.

A factual correction on Eastern Europe: Russia's 2022 full scale invasion of Ukraine caused a large wave of immigration into Eastern Europe, esp. into Poland. I have no idea if this is linked or not with the political choices, but it's good to get the facts right.

It is very clear that the far right is extremely adept at stoking _fears_ of immigration and immigrants. They play on the atavistic fear of the other, or in other words, racism, very effectively. That is not in dispute. But the maps explain why “being tough on immigration” usually fails to work.

In these Finnish elections in particular, it would also be very hard to point out any policy changes or differences in the immigration stances of the left-wing parties compared to the last elections. So the theory that this almost-landslide victory was caused by tougher stance simply isn’t credible.

BTW here’s the map of our radical right’s support in the previous municipal elections in 2021. Those who know the geography and demographics of Finland will note that as with German AfD, here too the support is anti-correlated with the numbers of immigrants.

No its a common fact that densely populated areas vote more left and rural more right. But you cant ignore that both Sweden and Germany now both have some of the most potent far right parties after practising the most open immigration policies.

Janne M. Korhonen @jmkorhonen.fi

You shouldn’t ignore the facts that far right is more popular in countries and areas with much less immigration, nor the fact that if you actually look at the far right vote share in Denmark, it is even higher than in Sweden. Even though your theory rested on the assumption it is the opposite.
