Time will tell if they match the output in a new league which is much tougher than the Bundesliga. Are we better off in aggregate? Again, only time will tell, but there’s a case for saying we are on paper. But, I still see nothing to suggest we wanted to sell Diaz. We just didn’t want to up his wage

Think the point is if you don’t want to up someone’s wage and pay market value for his production then you are acknowledging they are likely going to want to leave. You also have to look at the window as preparing for the next 4 years and while there is still work to be done, we can still win now.

Not disagreeing, but I would add that "market value" tends to overweight past production, and "true value" needs to estimate future production. It's the gap between these two values that causes the issue, and the reason smart clubs sell early.

Selling Diaz when we did, in those particular circumstances, was probably the optimum financial moment. But, if you asked Slot, I’m convinced he’d have preferred him to stay. In the end, with Ngumoha’s emergence, & having Ekitike/Wirtz who can fill in at LW if needed, I guess practicality took over.

Think this is fair: LFC didn’t want to sell Diaz but also didn’t want to pay to avoid inviting pressure from the player and his camp. Like I said earlier, I don’t think there’s a for sale or not for sale binary, there’s just a spectrum. We’d sell Salah if offered £300m, say, I think.

Coming into the summer there was a general sense that any of the 4 forwards other than Mo could move on and could be upgraded, so changes up front were certainly anticipated.

If Barcelona gave similar number or higher last year like Bayern Munich did, I think that Liverpool would be happy to sell Diaz last year. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I could be wrong of course.

I meant to say that I think that Liverpool would be happy to sell Diaz in 2024, not 2025.

Diaz’s camp [not necessarily Diaz himself] was happy to be flirting with Barcelona for two years.

Nobody is disputing that. We aren’t talking about Diaz’s intentions, though. His intentions were pretty clear. His agent & his dad didn’t hide them. Get a move, preferably to Barca, & get a fat contract.
