In 80s, my dad had an employee killed when a tractor flipped over on top of him. A guy down the road from us was killed when his shirt was caught in the PTO shaft of a tractor, turned him into hamburger instantly. We’ve had two heat related incidents requiring first aid this year. Ag is dangerous.

In his defense he is a Fox News employee. Ag work is hard and dangerous, lots of power equipment that kids shouldn't be using.

Ag workers also spray insecticides and herbicides, need to apply math to mix correct concentrations, purchase and wear PPE compatible with the hazard, and understand the safety and toxicity information on chemical product labels and safety data sheets. Anyone think a 12 year old kid can do that?

I'd like to watch Charlie buck hay on a warm sunny day.

I had a friend (now deceased) who lost his right arm to the elbow in a meat grinder, another who lost most of his leg to a corn silo...more friends than I can count missing fingers or portions of them to Ag injuries.

Raised on farms. Dangerous work indeed!

I wonder if they understand not all field labor is hand labor. All the land around my house is farm land, I’ve been here 5 years. I’ve never seen a human being out in those fields. They are MASSIVE machines, bigger than my car.

the great state of FL already passed laws enabling considerable child labor and removal of restrictions for hours worked

OSHA should not have been allowed to exempt Ag. Instead of "get big or get out" farmers should have been told to "get safe or get out."

Similar - in 6th grade a classmate was nearly killed when the tractor he was operating flipped on top of him. He missed nearly 6 months of school. When he came back, he’d lost tremendous weight and had permanent injuries - at age 12.

Exactly. I have a close friend in AL ag and he’s shown me and told me some wild shit. Peanut wagon tire blowing up in your face while adding air. PTO incidents, poisonous snakes in the wagons or bins, combine taking fingers off, hydraulic hose busting and removing an eye. It’s endless.

My uncle had a tractor tire “explode” on him in early 80s when he was adding air. Broke his nose. That event haunts me, I grind my teeth every time I put air in any tire.

My wife used to work at a paediatric hospital, and it was not uncommon to see Amish families there because their children do farm work.

They use horse power. My home village used donkeys. The idea of horses pulling a reaper or hay cutter terrifies me.
