I've come to realize from various conversations on here that people still believe the "old" USA exists. It doesn't. I highly recommend everyone read this book. It's history and our likely future.

No—authoritarian use of state power isn’t tied to communism, capitalism, or any single economic system. Whether under Stalin’s USSR or in other contexts, the pattern is the same: bending institutions, purging dissent, and weaponizing laws to serve one leader’s grip on power.

Thanks for mentioning this! I found it streaming free on ROKU, so I started watching tonight. For anyone else interested, other streaming options were available, but I didn't check them out because ROKU works for me. From what I've watched so far, very interesting but will have to finish tomorrow.

Last year before the election i asked several MAGA people if Trump is to Make America Great Again. When is the again he’s talking about? Never got an answer. Just meaningless speech about me being an unpatriotic commie. That must have been Trumps idea, it seems MAGA repeats what he says.

I just wish the Dems would wake up to that fact and at least try to formulate a strategy to prevent the fascist period that we are in from getting worse. Even if they fail, at least I’d like my granddaughter to be able to say there was an effective, coordinated opposition to the takeover.

Which parts of Conquest’s record are you calling “spectacularly checkered”? Many of his disputed Cold War claims on Stalin’s purges and famines were later supported by post-Soviet archives. His history stands up.

The parts where his coauthors repudiated the book & such. The Soviet archives said something very different as I recall. I didn't have a grand defender of Conquest's work in mind to address.

The archives supported his claims. There were many western intellectuals who softened Stalin’s crime as they were sympathetic to communism.
