Why do people book seats in the quiet carriage of a train and then sit and chat the entire time?

I want to know wtf happened to libraries. They used to be quiet sanctuaries.
Ikr? The librarians at my local library are the loudest people there.
Our library put up a giant screen so children could play really loud video games.
😯
Rips my knitting
Some people treat the quiet carriage like a library, others like a podcast studio
So they don’t have to hear *other* people chatting 🫠
I generally agree with your irritation. Unfortunately, the ground rules and their implementation are a bit wishy-washy. See also: sz-magazin.sueddeutsche.de/der-lokvogel...
I like the French way. No phone calls in any carriage. Even if I’m in a normal carriage, I go out into the entrance way to take a call. Unless it’s just ‘Yes, still on the train. Be there at xx’
Among the many excellent things about Japanese trains are the quiet and respect for others!
Varies around the country and the later in to the evening you’re on the trains. But, yes, typically everything public transport here is excellent.
I do it the same way, but I made an exemption once. I had to be on an MS Teams call, which I couldn't easily take in the entrance way. I did this in a regular carriage, kept it short and my voice down, but felt guilty.
The other carriages are full of people trying to ignore each other.
Where else can they hear themselves?
True!
If others talk too loud I sometimes just join the conversation (to show them that others can hear every single word). 😁
Haha. That’s an excellent idea!
I'd always assumed the quiet carriage was more "no music, phonecalls, shouting, kids" than no talking at all. But I don't use the train anyway
That's exactly what it is. Talking on phone is not allowed. Talking among your group is fine, as long as it's a normal level and not loud/disruptive. (We asked the staff on our last DB trip, as the woman in our carriage threw a fit that we were quietly talking.)
They aren’t quietly talking, and are laughing loudly. I’ve been shushed in the quiet coach for talking (was quite happy about that actually cause was travelling with my v annoying boss!)
According to Amtrak, you are supposed to limit your conversations, not chat to your companions the whole time, and when you do talk you're supposed to talk in subdued tones, not normal level. Sit somewhere else. www.amtrak.com/quiet-car
It completely defeats the purpose of the quiet car if everyone in the quiet car is chatting to their companions the whole time. The whole car hated your guts, and rightfully so.
Exactly. If you want to chat, there are plenty of other carriages—don’t ruin the one space meant for silence.
Captive audience. They like to hear themselves with little competition.
