The Dems had their share of those types in the past. The Dixiecrats started trickling into the GOP starting around 1965. They were steadily streaming into the GOP by the 70s and 80s. The floodgates opened in 2016, and the rest came in under Trump.

That was a deliberate strategy by Lee Atwater. ( and Karl Rove.) They looked at the Electoral College map, and decided to trade college-educated moderates for farm-state racists. Worked, too.
